At Costain I was brought in to analyse, debug, and rebuild a legacy architecture and application used for managing message signs used in Critical infrastructure for managing motorway variable message board systems. I was involved in upgrading the system from legacy Java 6 to Java 21+ and focused initially on creating a test environment that would allow us to prove our application reliability with the existing legacy software that was exported directly from the client servers and needing to be recreated. Afterwards i moved on to building a base foundation by isolating the webapp and backend API and moving away from a WAR application to a JAR application using a modern version of spring boot and spring data allowing the existing DAO to continue operating under developed integration tests, and expanding on missing test cases for core functionality such. I then helped onboard the new software consultant who continued on my initial development framework. Once all cylinders were firing I began taking on the entire process of creating the Angular application from the ground up to manage all the interactions between the web interface and hardware managing the physical message boards. This was a continuous process in which I was collaborating and extending the existing API whilst also implementing all the flexibility required in the webapp.

Assisting with standard day to day operations of managing a production system, helping guide other members of the team and enhance communication throughout the team whilst debugging issues throughout the development process. Contributing to the organisation and management of BAU tasks as well as pushing for a speedy, high quality review process to ensure work continues to be delivered in a timely manner. Working as the sole Full stack Software Engineer creating a mobile friendly energy dashboard, I spearheaded its development from concept to launch for my first independent software consulting project. I joined Pynea when there was virtually no code in sight. However, that quickly changed in the short period I was consulting this startup. Working closely with an external consultancy that was beginning to transition a product from MVP to stable, and production ready, no longer requiring assistance from the resource heavy and expensive consultancy. Entrenching myself into a world of graphs I began here by building a federated supergraph API from the ground up. Handling data for anything from housing specifications, to user sessions, as well as informing users of critical updates to the applications they were using. I extended a new component library built with tailwind that I championed bringing forward for flexibility in customising brand identity, which later expanded to being used in multiple differently purposed but clearly branded webapps with shared authentication look, feel, and flow, and assist with data ingestion, evaluating and calculating housing solutions, and customer organisation management and much more. After the departure of the consultancy, and reformation of teams, I found myself stepping up as an interim lead, assisting with gathering the requirements for the next phases to be implemented. I also took lead and implemented almost the entirety of the devops solution leading to fast, reliable and scalable environments with DR built in from the get go. Recreating the production customer facing monolith into microservices that optimise and reduce operational costs, using lambdas to handle API requests, dynamoDB to store and retrieve customer data, and S3 for loading any configuration or images required by the service. After successfully delivering on the previous project I was immediately re-engaged to deliver on another new public sector project, and delivering the same results while using the latest technologies with the recent introduction of Typescript while here. Starting my consulting career, I played a key role in assisting in the development and deployment of an urgently required interim health insurance webapp, simplifying insurance application interfaces and commercial APIs; Reducing computational resource in calculating insurance premiums, storing and managing quotes with relevant data in a relational database, bringing modern approaches to web design and development table. Joining a fast paced startup environment, I began delivering on multiple large key milestones in a mobile performance analytics platform capturing live data from real world devices. Such projects include migrating the old RDBMS into a new cloud based NoSQL database, and creating multiple micro services which are scalable to any size, one of which is able to parse and store compressed data at a high ingestion rate. I have helped to develop a new modern analytical platform, and managed to get the team into using a more agile approach for development. As an assistant developer at Nominet my knowledge had only deepened in the development world. On top of what I was previously doing I was now developing hand-crafted code driven, rapid and accurate reports that communicate with our internal services.
