I'm presently doing management consulting and communications for entities in Hawaii related to my experience in Historic Site Remediation and Management. I help foster and manage new native Hawaiian owned business start ups focused on preservation, protection and enhancement of the native Hawaiian cultural landscape.

I am an expert in land use law and native rights. I develop grass roots advocacy campaigns, mediate agreements, train political, cultural, environmental activists, lobby state legislatures and Congress on related issues.

My job was to garner grass roots support for opposing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I lobbied the Hawaii congressional delegation in Washington D.C. as well as the Hawaii State Legislature directly on Alaska Wilderness issues. Our efforts led to Senator Daniel Inouye, (D Hawaii) to comment on the Senate floor, “I have never in my entire career in the Senate received as many citizen comments on an individual issue as I have on this issue of drilling in the Arctic Refuge.” In Senator Daniel Akaka’s (D Hawaii) 2006 Senate campaign his stance on the Arctic Refuge was seen as the number two issue overall, outweighed only by the Iraq war. Due to this public pressure, Senator Akaka agreed to revisit his position and promised to visit affected native tribes this summer on the North Slope.My position afforded me the opportunity to spend extended time with a diverse group of native Alaskans leaders who, with my native Hawaiian cohort, became my “lobbying unit.” Together, we lobbied the halls of Congress and conducted a month long movie tour in Hawaii with “Oil on Ice.”

I published close to one hundred feature articles over four years focusing on environmental, cultural, and social justice issues in our community. My goal was to give voice to issues and/or people that weren’t being heard otherwise, to give depth and scope to local socio-political controversies using an even handed, no nonsense, extensively researched approach.

My advocacy work through various non-profit entities caused me to be involved in several lawsuits in defense of public trust resources in our community. Since our budgets for these activities were virtually nil, our pro bono attorneys took to training me to do a lot of the work myself. Eventually one of my attorneys hired me to work for him. My duties included research and investigation related to new cases and the preparation of concise summaries. Letter writing and normal everyday tasks related to law office operations were also part of my job. I also got to work on my own cases that my employer represented me in.
