In this post I was the lead design engineer, tasked with the development of a novel bioreactor for the culture of knee replacement implants containing stem cells and various biomaterials, fabricated using a 3D bioprinting technology. Tasks involved the research and review of literature on the mechanobiological requirements of implants, bioreactor engineering, materials and parts selection, iterative CAD design of all bioreactor parts, creation of technical drawings and preliminary process control work.Key skills developed included effective communication and teamwork, efficient project planning, clear and concise presentation of progress and justification of decisions. Maintaining confidentiality of intellectual property and awareness of regulatory requirements were required at all phases of the design process.

This summer project involved the presentation of a literature review of expected sour water emissions from chemical process plants and farm lagoons in order to inform future process management of a nearby petrochemical plant to meet changing environmental regulations.Key learning points included the ability to perform literature surveys and the awareness of inclusion/exclusion criteria. Disseminating and presentation of key information from complex publications was also essential.

This ten-week project was in conjunction with Orkney Islands Council. The project remit was to analyse the various existing and future fuel type requirements of the Orkney Islands and accounting for surplus energy generation. I liased with various council members to obtain fuel storage figures in order to inform my suggestions for the development needs and end-uses of these fuel options. My main suggestions for future fuels included the use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) and hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of sea water.Key learning points included the need to be an effective communicator as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, translating scientific information into understandable concepts, being persistent and understanding the infrastructural needs of an island community
