About Jack Macy

Jack Macy is a recognized zero waste visionary and leader with 38 years experience in developing, implementing and managing innovative composting, recycling and other zero waste policies and programs at the local and state level. He led the development of San Francisco’s internationally awarded and the first U.S. large-scale urban commercial and residential food composting program that has become the model that many jurisdictions in CA, US and worldwide have followed. He also led San Francisco's efforts in developing and implementing groundbreaking zero waste policies and programs over the last 3 decades. As Zero Waste Program Manager Jack oversees San Francisco's zero waste efforts and a team of 17. Jack's leadership led to San Francisco's zero waste policies, including mandating compostable or recyclable food service ware, banning polystyrene foam packaging, banning plastics including the first plastic checkout bag ban, requiring checkout bags charges to promote reusable bags, mandating construction and demolition debris recovery, and mandating comprehensive recycling and composting (including food) requiring everyone and all properties to source separate recyclables and compostables from trash, and having SF's Climate Action Plan include a consumption based inventory and zero waste targets & practices. San Francisco's mandatory food composting program is a model for implementing California's SB 1383 law requiring all jurisdictions to recover organics from landfills to reduce methane emissions. Prior to San Francisco, Jack developed and directed a model statewide composting program in Massachusetts achieving a statewide landfill ban on yard trimmings.Jack is on the Board of the California Organics Recycling Council and Board Treasurer and Global Advisory Hub member of GAIA (Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives) supporting 1000 organizations in 92 countries. Jack won the 2010 “Recycler of the Year” Award by the California Resource Recovery Association; and 5 state & national awards for San Francisco's organics recycling programs. He received the San Francisco Municipal Fiscal Advisory Committee Certificate of Merit for “In Recognition of Managerial Excellence and Achievement” for foodware reduction. Jack has published several articles, including in BioCycle and Resource Recycling. He has presented many times in events across the globe and guest lectured in universities. He has provided strategic assistance, coaching and inspiration to jurisdictions and groups around the globe for composting and other a zero waste policies and programs.
