About Jack Miles

MSc Biotechnology graduate currently working as a genetic screening scientist at BenevolentAI. Utilising gene engineering approaches to drive the drug discovery process.Prior to this position I worked as a research assistant at the University of Cambridge's physiology department. During this time, I acquired key practical skills such as DNA/RNA extraction and purification, cDNA synthesis, qPCR and western blotting experience, Protein purification, extraction and analysis. Along with the lab based skills I also gained exposure to a variety transferable skills such as; production and following of standard operating procedures, risk assessments and study plans, academic writing and review for publication, presentation, interpersonal and communication skills, bioinformatics and data analysis through the use of analytical software like MATLAB, Graphpad Prism and SPSS statistics.Following this experience during my postgraduate studies I developed my skills further in the areas of molecular and microbiology and gained a much wider appreciation for the biotechnology industry. I learned new skills such as whole genome and 16s sequencing, along with subsequent bioinformatic investigations. My masters also allowed me to improve my time management and self-motivation skills due to the high demand of multiple on-going projects. My masters also culminated in a 3-month study investigating bacteria in river waters that can produce novel antibiotics. This was an area I had much less experience in and enjoyed learning a range of new and interesting microbiology techniques. Using the knowledge, skills, qualifications, and connections I made whilst studying I hope to test and push the boundaries of modern biotechnology, ultimately to add to the wider scientific and medical community.
