Startup developing a third-generation “blockchain” from scratch. The architecture incorporates a DAG of blocks (vs. a linear chain), Proof of Stake consensus algorithm (vs. Proof of Work), industry-standard WebAssembly VM (vs. a custom VM), and a capabilities-based security model. Wrote the product spec (https://techspec.casperlabs.io/introduction/product-specification). Evolved product usage model and software architecture with the goal of maximizing the growth rate of the ecosystem on the platform and the range of dapps that can be deployed. Ecosystem development included environments and tools for smart contract development and developing example dapps highlighting platform capabilities.

Startup developing a cloud-resident platform targeting the (building) architecture, engineering, and construction industry – an industry ripe for a “software eats everything” disruption replacing humans with algorithms. The Aditazz platform and vertical apps adapt the behavioral simulation, spatial layout, and design automation algorithms developed in the semiconductor industry to the algorithmic design and optimization of buildings. Member of the executive staff managing geographically-distributed teams responsible for product definition and management, UX design, software architecture and development, test automation, and devops. Had the good fortune to have a team of (building) architects on staff allowing me to conduct high-intensity market research, value-proposition discovery, and product iteration (without having to interact with the TSA). The front-end is distributed React components making extensive use of 3D modeling and data visualization. The backend is distributed micro-services that are a mixture of genetic algorithms, constraint and SMT solvers, graph algorithms, event-driven simulation engines, and multiple SQL, NoSQL, and graph databases – each in Docker containers built with continuous integration running on a broad range of compute, storage, and network Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Early stage startup developing a product line of flash storage boxes and a “rack-in-a-box”. Second employee; conducted market research and pre-sales with the usual Fortune500 suspects; co-defined the company’s product line and roadmap; co-architected all systems; coded an event-driven performance simulator. The storage boxes are 1U chassis with an array of high-density flash DIMMs, FPGA-based custom processors for hardware offload of file and block storage protocols and RAID, and sub-system redundancy for high-availability. The rack-in-a-box is a 2U chassis composed of an array of micro-server DIMMs and flash storage DIMMs inter-connected on a peer-to-peer PCIe fabric and incorporating hardware-assisted inter-box clustering. The rack-in-a-box cried out for an actor-like software substrate enabling MapReduce/Hadoop and machine learning software topologies (sadly, these cries were not heard).

Startup developing a cloud-resident collaboration and social productivity app and platform that allows users to interconnect their goals and activities with people, documents, communications, and web services. Starting with a concept, executed “Lean Startup” value proposition discovery with pivots; designed and iterated the product definition with obsessive focus on the user experience; coded the prototype client and server. Built the team; evolved the prototype into a beta using an agile methodology; acquired beta customer.

Startup developing a HW/SW system for real-time monitoring of supply chain transportation networks. As a board member I monitored corporate execution: Financials, the sales funnel, product development. Mote hardware installed in truck trailers self-organizes a wireless mesh network that monitors environment and geographical position which then feeds a customizable web portal with backend data analytics. Iterated the business plan through multiple pivots while conducting market research and technology exploration. Closed the company’s first sale – the buyer was a Fortune100 company.

Software infrastructure for cloud computing. Employed novel operating system architectures, abstractions for distributed and concurrent software, and "virtual compute factories" as abstractions for mapping IT expenses to business goals. Brought economics and business KPI's into the generation and allocation of computing. Automation of system administration and measurement incorporated as first-class citizens.

Managed the engineering department of a Loudcloud/Opsware-like startup. Delivered an extensible framework for automated datacenter management including staging and provisioning of arbitrary SW stacks, monitoring for performance and billing, asset tracking, OLAP of historical behavior data. Multiple datacenters worldwide running three-tier stacks on Windows, Solaris, and Linux. Customers included GE, BellSouth, WebMD, Playboy. Actively involved in product line definition, business development, and formation of strategic business direction.

Director of the Enterprise Platforms Lab: Built and managed a large multi-site organization delivering a Java virtual machine and JIT compiler, a framework for monitoring dynamic behavior of distributed web services, a whole-system simulation and measurement environment with analytics, thread-level-parallel and instruction-level-parallel compilers, and the architecture of processors and server platforms. Managed a $25M+ academic research budget. Actively involved in strategic planning and business development.External interface: Significant experience with customer relationships and with representing Intel to the business and technical press, industry and financial analysts, and at industry conferences.Itanium: Member of Intel-HP deal team. Upon consummation of the agreement became a lead architect of the iA64 instruction set, co-inventor of many of the fundamental patents.Pentium: Architect of the Pentium microprocessor including responsibility, with product planning, for all customer interface in the US.
