I am an enthusiatic analytical scientist, specialising in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry with an interest in environmental health and wastewater-based epidemiology. I enjoy working at the interefaces between chemistry, analytical science and biology; learning how to apply what I know to new challenges.I currently work for Syngenta in crop protection R&D, where I support the development of novel agrochemicals by empowering my colleagues to get the best results possible out of LC-MS through training, upskilling and developing our analytical toolkit. My overall goal is to help them relise that they are secretly analytical scientists too! After completing my PhD, I was fortunate to join the small start-up Verdel Instruments as an application scientist working to development of new mass spec instrumentation and demonstrate our ability to identify molecules in analytically challenging samples without the need for chromatography. My PhD was completed at the University of Bath, UK and explored the use of LC-MS/MS for assessing public and environmental health, through the analysis of proteins of infectious disease, compounds of emerging environmental concern, pharmaceuticals and drugs of abuse in urban and environmental water. I also completed my undergraduate MChem at the University of Bath, UK, which included an industrial placement with GlaxoSmithKline as a Quality Assurance (QA) scientist at a secondary manufacturing site, using LC-UV to support site activities surrounding the manufacture and packaging of penicillins to GMP and GLP guidelines. My MChem thesis explored the effect of chirality on the environmental fate and persistence of ephedrine in river water and was published in 2018.I am a proud committee member of the Analytical Science Network (ASN), a branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Analytical Division focused on early-career analytical scientists. I am currently vice-chair of the ASN conference "Emerging Analytical Professionals", ASN website coordinator and the ASN representative to the analytical division council.
