About Jack Siegfried

I've been an automotive enthusiast and mechanic for many years. I have a passion for human interaction, so I have spent 30 years in sales. I first started working when I was very young. My father owned a petroleum recycling business, and during the summer I would help out in the refinery canning department, watching that there were plenty of oil can lids for the machine on that filling line. I probably wasn't much help, but my father took me to the plant all summer so that my mother could spend time developing her real estate business. Per Dad's plan, I ended up with a strong work ethic. I cut lawns and cleaned pools in the neighborhood, but didn't get paid for our lawn or pool. I made enough to buy my first drum set when I was 12. I got my first car at 16 (a 1948 Studebaker coupe) from work at Dad 's refinery, driving trucks some and helping Hank, the mechanic. That began a long automotive trail that continues to today. I have been paid for doing many jobs, but if there are automotive links, it isn't "work". I once owned 6 cars,an RV and three motorcycles. I have pared it down to three cars and one Harley. An improvement ?

Listed skills include Vehicles, Automotive, Automobile, Parts, and 5 others.

No matter what befell those customers in their earlier lives, they have learned and employed these future-changing lessons. The gift of a car means that they are no longer dependent on public transportation, or sympathetic family or friends to deliver children to day care, schools or doctor visits, and to allow the parent to shop, or show up to work on time. I find pleasure in the company of fellow mechanics, especially when they also feel the needs of the community and volunteer their skill and effort to affect the lives of others. For me, the real pay-off is watching the customer attain transportation independence through the ceremony of "The Blessing", where they are awarded the keys to the car we have repaired for them. The rite includes prayers and our recognition of their recent lifestyle achievement; tears of gratitude often accompany the ceremony.Because every human interaction can be seen as a sale (of the organization I represent, of the quality of the work done, or my own interaction with colleagues and customers), each Blessing wraps up, with a spiritual bow, the components of my passion. For 15 years I worked the front counter of P&A Smith, a family operated repair shop specializing in Volvos. When I first arrived, there were already hundreds of returning customers. Paul and Addie Smith heaped love and quality repair on their clients, had no turnover in mechanics for the first 10 years of my employment, and most likely doubled the number of customers during my tenure. Paul paid his mechanics a salary, thinking that a commission basis might tempt them to suggest unneeded parts or repairs. Finally, after 20 years of sales experience I witnessed the tenets of Carnegie Sales Training utilized: we knew the families of our customers, kept records on all previous repairs for each car, and strove to meet their expectations every visit. We used the RO Writer management program to enter and track the problems, their diagnosis and the parts used, and prices of the repairs. With this knowledge of our customers, with total trust established, dishonesty would have been easy, but not for Paul and Addie. When I got home after work I didn't need any further social input; I had just spent a day with a myriad of customer/ friends and had a clear conscience.Paul's spirituality re-awakened my own. I began to volunteer in the community, at first with the homeless at The Carying Place, and then at Wheels4Hope with those who were overcoming other of life's vicissitudes. I had been at P&A for 10 years when the Smiths decided to retire, and sold the company. I hung on for a few years, but things change under different management, so I retired at age 67. I did not, however retire from volunteering, and am still engaged a few day per week at Wheels4Hope. Show less

We made communication satellites for TV broadcasting and weather forecasting, and we also built top secret satellites for U.S defense agencies. All orders for a new satellite come with a very strict set of manufacturing process instructions that are agreed to by the managers of pertinent departments. It is a given in Quality Assurance that any process will improve if it is carefully watched. To enable modern 6-Sigma/Continuous Measurable Improvement (CMI) to supercede the old inspect-in-quality format, we trained teams of department managers in the use of metrics to standardize their approach to manufacturing quality. Although it proved difficult to establish a metric for some jobs, we empowered the process users to develop a method to track each procedure. Some NIH (Not Invented Here) attitudes had to be overcome. CMI changed ingrained cultural resistance; during the annual Air Force MultiZone Evaluation we were awarded a rare Superior rating.Unfortunately, the new Hughes CEO decided that instead of continuing the expense of maintaining a division kept solely for Systems Engineers, they should be strewn throughout all other divisions. Our home (and my job) was eliminated. I decided to return to my automotive roots, and took advantage of an opportunity to retrain defense engineers at the Sun/Snap-on facility, where i freshened my automobile diagnostic and repair skills. The dated carburetor-distributor components from the old days have given way to a system where control of the fuel, ignition and emission components are handled by computers. New technical tools needed to be learned. Show less

New Era Farm Service was a very progressive organic company selling soil and plant fertility monitoring and improvement processes, not only to small family farms, but also to large corporate Ag businesses. New Era was the largest producer of aerobically converted agricultural compost in the West, and had developed a series of microbial foliar feeding products, both to either organically accelerate plant growth, or to promote fruiting activity. My district was an area I had already developed from a previous job selling my father's oil products to the farmers in the counties of the central San Juaquin Valley. Knowing the farmers was a plus; not knowing much about organic agriculture was not. New Era's President spent a month that winter bringing me up to speed, basically by having me read books by early organic farming gurus (like Albrecht), and tutoring me on agricultural chemistry. So,into the fray. Calling on old customers while wearing a different hat is confusing to them. Those that had learned to trust me found how they were misusing their basic asset (their soil). They would allow me to show them how to "let their dirt do the work" by applying compost to their soil, which works by adding and encouraging the beneficial soil critters to convert organic constituents into plant available nutrients. It contains nutrients in plant available forms, and can replace applied fertilizers.Sometimes I would suggest soil testing to see the benefit of increasing the content of organic matter in their sandy soil which would allow them to use less water. Eventually we were accepted and successful, and added water penetration treatments, organic pest control techniques, etc to the New Era menu of services. However New Era's more expensive processes didn't survive the agricultural recession of the mid-80's. New Era Farm Service was too far ahead of it's time, using time-tested processes. Show less
