Professor Jack Silver PhD DSc CChem FRSC moved from Essex University to the position of Professor of Chemichromic Materials, University of Greenwich (1996 to 2005), to be director of the Centre for Phosphors and Display materials, then moved again taking the entire group to Brunel University in Jan. 2006 to become Executive Director of the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing. He gained his BSc in 1970 and PhD in 1973 (both from the University of London). He became a Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1982 and a Fellow in 1987. He was awarded his D.Sc. in 1992 (University of London). J. S.’s current research focuses on Phosphors and Display Materials and their applications in displays, lighting and photo-voltaic applications. He also has interests in new forms of polymer and biopolymer processing.J.S’s research has been featured in a number of soft science magazines including New Scientist, Physics World and Electronics Weekly. He has given many plenary and invited lectures at both international and national conferences in the fields of Phosphors, electronic display materials and inorganic chemistry. He and his group presented over 240 lectures/talks/posters at international and national meetings. He has published over 420 papers in refereed international journals as well as reviews. J.S has acted as a consultant to industry in several fields including the areas of LED phosphors and display materials. In the past JS has been active in the fields of inorganic, organometallic chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry he holds/has held more than twenty patents, including a very successful pharmaceutical one (in the form of the only oral iron binding drug currently on the market) for removing iron from the human body that is manufactured in Europe as “ Desferiprone”. The drug is now used for treating patients in more than 90 countries.Specialties: The laboratories in the Wolfson Centre regularly make pioneering contributions in Photonic and Phosphor materials in both the macro and nanometre particle worlds. In the last six years the Centre has worked with over one hundred Industrial/commercial companies.
