The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel of which I was part is an independent body commissioning reviews of serious child safeguarding cases. The Collection & Packaging Reforms (CPR) programme of which I was part is at the head of the government’s resources and waste strategy. Focusing on the continued import of food from the EU while ensuring public health, Defra’s Biosecurity, Borders & Trade Programme is at the forefront of the UK’s Brexit response. UK Research & Innovation manages the funding of British academia and other organisations on behalf of the government. Representing over a million people across 69 wards, Birmingham City Council is the largest public authority in Europe. Its Public Health team is correspondingly large and complex and so was presented with a significant challenge at the beginning of the pandemic. My role was to assist in focusing its efforts to control the virus, advising on communications strategy, while producing accurate, trustworthy Covid-related advice to be distributed across the city.Key responsibilities Working alongside the Director of Public Health Birmingham, PHE and NHS to produce and distribute Covid-19 guidanceIssuing regular updates to the public and stakeholders in line with government messagingWorking with MPs and councillors to address concerns and issues in constituenciesPublishing emergency announcements and dealing with urgent press enquiriesManaging ‘Covid-19 Community Champion’ scheme, whose success influenced a central government decision to roll out its own scheme nationallyOrganising and hosting online events with experts for public and pressWriting scripts for use in recorded content: TV, radio and InternetOverseeing social media accounts and contentAdvising on style and tone of messaging.

A mixture of organisations, including the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Midland Metro Alliance is the entity in charge of four concurrent tram projects. Tying-in with other local construction projects, especially HS2, the project I led on – the Birmingham Eastside Extension – is one of the most high-profile schemes and is still a source of great public interest. It was my role to work directly with all manner of stakeholders and to communicate a positive message about the benefits of the work to the region.Key responsibilitiesLiaising with relevant political stakeholders with interests in the Metro, specifically the Birmingham Eastside Extension linking HS2Working with partners in the area, such as Birmingham City Council, WMCA and Mayor of West MidlandsResearching all concurrent developments in the local area, mapping stakeholders, creating lists of contacts and liaising with relevant parties through appropriate channelsCommunicating with businesses and residents affected by the Metro installationKeeping local community groups and resident associations informed of plans

The West Midlands Combined Authority is, as the name suggests, the strategic body with powers across 18 local authorities, including Birmingham City Council. The WMCA oversees transport, economic development and regeneration in the region. Working on one of the authority’s main transport projects – Sprint – my role was to build and maintain relationships with various stakeholders, including MPs, councillors and private enterprises to successfully deliver the scheme.Key responsibilitiesCreating comms and engagement strategies for use in campaigns, often in association with other TfWM functions and projectsEngaging with all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, local government representatives and the publicOrganising and working on public, political and commercial engagement eventsIssuing detailed responses to public, private and political enquiries, often on behalf of the Mayor or other members of WMCA senior leadershipWorking with the wider media team to manage WMCA and TfWM reputations following controversial media attention – issuing press releases and statementsWriting and publishing comprehensive reports to be issued to stakeholders and the public ahead of the Sprint constructionActing as a point of contact for all political, private and public enquiriesWriting Mayoral briefings and policy documents.
