After working over the summer with the Adenbaum Foundation Biomedical Engineering Research Internship, I was asked to remain on the team for the Dr. Parker Lab for Proteomics, Personalized Medicine, and HIV Prevention for the following year as a research lab assistant. In this position, I continued with my experiments that I designed from over the summer as well as trained and presented my current research and findings to the new members of the lab who joined this semester. As the year progressed, I designed and executed other experiments involving the potential correlation between the BCG vaccine and induced rates of HIV in infants, targeted proteomics of the immune system's inflammatory response, and bladder cancer.

My responsibilities revolved around research in proteomics, personalized medicine, and HIV prevention. More specifically, during this internship I conducted experiments to study differentiated macrophages’ effect on HIV prevention in women of diverse ethnic groups. Additionally, I conducted many literature reviews to assemble a better profile and understanding of what "good" vaginal health meant for these women of these diverse groups. Through this experience, I designed and conducted experiments independently, analyzed results, and offered improvements that will been incorporated in future experiments. In regards to daily lab work and maintenance, I drafted SOPs, IRBs, and protocols as part of establishing this new lab, as well as managed a lab budget of $5,000, maintained equipment and a cleanroom environment, and ordered reagents and other necessary supplies.

The Center for Safety, Simulation and Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) provides education, medical training, and services throughout the University of Florida Academic Health Center, local and regional emergency personnel, and industry executives and personnel worldwide.As a lab assistant, I debugged and coded the programs in Unity Engine that allowed these medical simulations to run. This opportunity has not only allowed me to advance my programming skills but also begin my exposure to model creation through CAD. Building on flight-proven, NASA patented technology, the company aims to provide active solutions for high heat flux applications by developing pumped fluid systems with no moving parts that can be scaled and tailored to customers' needs. The company’s mission is to make the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) micropump as versatile and commonplace as the transistor.Over the course of the project, I performed application assessments, validated market needs, and determined potential market size. The project involved data gathering through interviews with potential customers and co-development partners where I had the opportunity to experiment within the customer discovery and validation process. Overall, the goal to produce and test a business model canvas that could be launched the customer creation phase was achieved. This was a true ground floor opportunity in a company which aims to become a global leader in high flux thermal management systems.

The program is designed to take a select group of applicants from the colleges of Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and Warrington College of Business and have them form interdisciplinary teams. We participated in a 15-18 week program focused on taking us deeper into an understanding of how to work together to pursue the development of a project or technology. With our teams, we progressed through the process of idea generation, problem and solution definition, customer discovery and feedback analysis, and finally development of an overall project summary pitch based on the results of their efforts. The program culminated in a presentation of the project summary to a group of investors in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering West Coast Advisory Board.
