I have completed a 12 month placement as Student Process Engineer at Solvay's Oldbury site. The Oldbury site consists of 13 production units or plants to manufacture mainly phosphorus and phosphorus-based products.As a member of the Manufacturing Development team, I worked on a large range of projects including capital projects, process optimisation, troubleshooting and control. Capital Projects Project leader responsible for project management, meeting deadlines and organising a multi-discipline teamInvolved in all stages including process design: development of PFD, P&ID, scopes and designs for other disciplines (mech, E&I etc).Checking mechanical completion, commissioning and operator training.OptimisationEvaluating then modifying all aspects of a process to improve output, efficiency etc. Including control, batch schedules, batch sizes and the logistics of the process. Control Engineering Developed understanding of control systems. Assisted with writing control code and operator graphicsProcess TroubleshootingInvestigation into why the problem has arisen. Assisting the plant to find solutions in the short term and the long termActing as a link to University of Birmingham led two groups of 2nd year students around the Semi-Works plant explaining the process, equipment, control and relevant optimisation. In addition I have recently presented a summary of my 12 month placement to 2nd and 3rd year Chemical Engineering students.As a student representative to the local area I gave three monthly presentations about my role and work at community meetings.I thoroughly enjoyed my 12 month placement at Solvay, Oldbury and has proven to me that a career in engineering is one I wish to pursue.
