Profile bio

About Jack Wilkinson

I’m Jack, an innovation strategist and design futurist. I am currently a Strategy Director at Jam3, a global experience design agency where I lead research, strategy, and the design of innovative experiences and new offerings for global brands including EA, Adidas, Google, PepsiCo, VISA, and Diageo. During my time, the company doubled in size and recently won 2020 Digital Innovation Agency of the Year. I co-founded the Design Futures Initiative and now sit on their board. DFI's mission is to spread speculative design and futures-oriented creative practices. We do this through our annual conference, PRIMER, and our international network of meet-ups, Speculative Futures. Most recently I have designed a curriculum to teach Design Futuring in partnership with the Kedge Futures School.Formerly, I was a Lead Design Strategist at the Future Company where I led projects for system transformation and social impact. While there, I helped launch the National Innovation Service. I received my MFA in Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons School of Design. After graduating, I continued at Parsons, teaching design research, sustainable business strategy and systems-thinking in the Strategic Design and Management program. Outside of my work in strategy and design, I am an avid traveller, a trained chef and occasionally I moonlight as a stand-up comic.

Listed skills include Social Media, Entertainment, Ideation, Speculation, and 11 others.

The Extrapolation Factory

The Extrapolation Factory is an imagination-based studio for design-led futures studies, founded by Chris Woebken and Elliott P. Montgomery. The studio develops experimental methods for collaboratively prototyping, experiencing and impacting future scenarios. Central to these methods is the creation of hypothetical future props and their deployment in familiar contexts such as 99¢ stores, science museums, vending machines and city sidewalks. With this work, the studio is exploring the value of rapidly imagined, prototyped, deployed and evaluated visions of possible futures on an extended time scale. The Extrapolation Factory has worked with partners and organizations such as Autodesk Research, UNICEF, TED Active, Museum of Arts and Design, Eyebeam, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Columbia University’s Studio-X NYC, Z33 Hasselt, The Royal College of Art, NYU’s ITP Program, Parsons The New School for Design, SVA’s Products of Design, The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Ontario College of Art and Design, Forum for the Future and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The Core77 Design Award granted to The Extrapolation Factory in 2013’s Speculative Design category and the Extrapolation Factory was nominated for the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year award in 2015.

Urban Intelligence Lab

Greater New York City Area

Led by Shannon MatternWe live amidst real-time data flows, with sensors measuring everything from air quality to traffic, with our own cell phones yielding information about our whereabouts and activity levels, with buildings reporting on their own energy consumption and maintenance. This urban "intelligence" ostensibly allows for the optimization of our environments and our selves - for the production of "smart cities" and smart citizens. In this hybrid studio we'll examine how the methods of data science shape our civic values and urban imaginaries, and condition the work of urban design and administration; and we'll assess the consequences - for the material environment, for urban citizenship, for quality of life, etc. - when data and efficiency drive design and development decisions. Taking the nearby Hudson Yards development as our case study, we'll explore not only how "smartness" is operationalized in such new urban developments, but also what other kinds of intelligence have long been present in our cities. To evaluate Hudson Yards's smarts, we'll develop a collection of "urban intelligence test kits" - IQ tests, guidebooks, measurement instruments, field kits, etc. - to evaluate how human and machine logics, intelligences, and values are integrated and negotiated on this urban test-bed. **The course is supported by a generous grant from the Provost's Innovations in Education Fund, which will cover necessary costs for specialized training, design consultation, fabrication, and publication of our results; and our work will be featured in a special "urban interfaces" issue of MIT Press's Leonardo Electronic Almanac.
