The Kettering Foundation is a nonprofit operating foundation rooted in the American tradition of cooperative research. The foundation’s small staff and extensive network of associates collaborate with community organizations, government agencies, researchers, scholars, and citizens around the world. Kettering’s primary research question is, what does it take to make democracy work as it should? Kettering’s research is distinctive because it is conducted from the perspective of citizens and focuses on what people can do collectively to address problems affecting their lives, their communities, and their nation.The foundation seeks to identify and address the challenges to making democracy work as it should through interrelated program areas that focus on citizens, communities, and institutions.Those working on related problems share what they are learning at the foundation’s many meetings, which provide space for an ongoing exchange of ideas and stories. As a research assistant my primary duties are to provide Kettering staff support for this work, including reviews of relevant scholarly, popular and professional literature.

The Colorado State University Center for Public Deliberation is dedicated to enhancing local democracy through improved public communication and community problem solving. I spent more than 360 hours on projects in the Northern Colorado region. Much of our work focused on convening and facilitating forums on public issues. Issues were diverse, but included, poverty, regional development, education and homelessness. I facilitated small group discussion at more than 25 public meetings with mayors, city managers, students, other public and private professionals and citizens. Typically over 40 people at our public meetings. Another critical component of this position was designing meeting process, researching issues, and framing discussion materials.

Each year the Office of Orientation and Transition Programs assist first-year and transfer students in developing academic effectiveness, peer relationships, and personal adjustment to CSU through small and large group discussions, individual peer interactions, and educational presentations. Assisting parents, family members, and guests of students in the transition to CSU through positive interactions, campus tours, and facilitating discussions is a critical part of that process.Orientation Leaders also: serve as a supervisor for 10-20 Ram Welcome Leaders; lead campus tours during orientation programs for students and parents, families and guests; serve as presenters for educational sessions during orientation programs; assist with class registration and some peer advising.

I was responsible for the training, hiring, and management of painters, the buying of equipment and supplies, communication with homeowners and employees, payroll submission and distribution, and the overall management and production of a painting business. My business grossed over $30,000 on a total of ten homes.College Works Painting is a venture capitalist company with one of the most hands-on internships available in the country. Students who are hired are assigned a territory in the state to market and work, and receive the support of the Vice President of the company, a District Manager, and other Student Managers/Interns, but must rely on ingenuity and hard work for the most part.
