About Jack Corps
I currently work at Johnson Matthey as a Product Development Chemist in their Clean Air Sector. My work includes developing new and enhancing existing catalysts for light duty diesel automotive applications. Automotive catalysts are a vital part of reducing harmful emissions from vehicles and giving everyone cleaner air. It is a very satisfying knowing your hard work will ultimately improve the planet and that I am doing my bit to help.In February 2014, I successfully completed my Ph.D. in solid-state materials chemistry at Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom. My MChem (Hons) degree gave me a good understanding of organic, inorganic, physical, computational, analytical and materials chemistry. This allowed me to specialise in solid-state chemistry during my postgraduate studies. My research focused on understanding relationships between structure and properties of low-dimensional chalcogenides. In particular work on new potential tellurium-free thermoelectric materials for the recovery of low-grade waste heat applications were investigated. My research involved synthesis of both previously reported and novel materials, structural investigations and the measurement of thermoelectric and magnetic properties, amongst others.
Listed skills include Research, Solid State Chemistry, Chemistry, Thermoelectrics, and 14 others.

Product Development Chemist
My current role is a Development Chemist in the Clean Air sector at Johnson Matthey. In this role I develop new technologies and grow them in to state of the art catalysts that reduce the pollutants released by diesel vehicles. I record the catalytic activity by implementing a range of testing methods and analytical techniques. I also reporting my results clearly, concisely and in a timely fashion. There are many challenges that have to be overcome in my role. My understanding of chemistry as well as my desire to succeed, allows me to tackle these tasks effectively.
Postgraduate Researcher
My research focused on understanding relationships between structure and properties of low-dimensional chalcogenides. In particular work on new potential tellurium-free thermoelectric materials for the recovery of low-grade waste heat applications were investigated. My research involved synthesis of new materials, structural characterisation and measurement of thermoelectric and magnetic properties.I have successfully demonstrated the ability to analyse problems and actively worked towards solving them. These range from explaining results obtained during experiments to researching additional analytical techniques that could provide a more complete understanding of the observed behaviour. One of the things I enjoyed most about working on my project is that it has given me the opportunity to work independently and be responsible for how I have chosen to further my research. It has allowed me to research a topic of interest and develop it into something that I have been able to publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals and give oral presentations at both national and international conferences.Over the course of my PhD I took over responsibility for maintaining the suite of measurement and characterisation equipment within the group. This included fault diagnosis, stripping equipment down where required, effecting repairs where possible and liaising with technical staff or company engineers where more specialised repairs were required.
Laboratory Demonstrator
During my time as a Postgraduate Researcher, I assisted in the undergraduate teaching laboratory sessions. Over the years I demonstrated several different classes including Inorganic Chemistry, Colour Chemistry and Chemistry for Chemical Engineering. During these sessions I was required to supervise undergraduates when they were performing their experiments. I was required to ensure students worked safely, in a timely fashion and offer assistance to students who were requiring additional support if they were having problems. After lab sessions I was required to mark and grade reports before returning them with comments to the students within the set time limits.I also assisted with several outreach events for school children visiting the department. These included the Scottish School's Analyst Competition and Chemical Cluedo, which involved the children using chemistry in a murder mystery setting.
