The overarching goal of my research career is to ensure that all babies no matter how small or how young, have a healthy start to life and a healthy future. I have a research background in fetal physiology and development; more specifically in cardio-respiratory development and the impact that fetal growth restriction has on the developing heart and cardiovascular system. Using advanced fetal MRI techniques I have been focused on validating novel MRI sequences to better detect at risk fetuses so as to provide clinicians more information when decisions are being made surrounding the optimal timing of delivery for growth restricted fetuses at risk of still birth. Moreover, we have been using these same MRI techniques to better understand how the fetal circulation responds to hypoxaemia over both acute and chronic periods as well as in response to potential pharmaceutical interventions for fetal growth restriction. More recently, I have continued my research outside the womb during neonatal life were I have been running preclinical projects utilising advanced imaging modalities to assess interventions against ventilator induced lung injury in preterm infants.
