I worked in the Related Entities team, who are responsible for suggestions within Google's Knowledge Graph. Given a seed entity (e.g. an actor) we wish to return a ranked list of the most relevant entities to the seed (e.g. their movies in order of importance).During my internship I developed a system for collecting and integrating human feedback into the Related Entities service. This consisted of two main elements:- Design of a system for collecting evaluation data from a pool of distributed workers (crowd-sourced human input).- Creation of a procedure for improving the rankings provided by the Related Entities service using the collected data. Initially a simple search procedure was used to find improvements, but a mixed-integer optimization approach replaced this later on.This implementation delivered significant improvements to the quality of the Related Entities service.

Development of an extensible network visualisation tool as part of Netsoft Sydney, involving complex work in Python and JavaScript to aggregate data regarding the Google network and present this to users.

During the summer of 2011-12, I was employed by Derceto Ltd. as a summer intern. Derceto is a New Zealand-based engineering firm whose sole product is the Derceto Aquadapt® software package that optimises a water distribution network in real time to deliver lower energy use, leading to lower emissions and electricity costs.My work completed at Derceto involved comprehensive analysis and development of optimisation and simulation models, providing assistance in commercial software development, computer system maintenance and data analysis.Major projects included:- Developing simulation model of a water distribution network in Matlab to test the effects of proposed changes to the system’s control scheme.- Developing database query tool to be integrated within Excel (using VBA and Firebird ODBC) to aid clients in data analysis- Responsibility for upgrade and deployment of company-wide intranet
