President & Chief Medical OfficerGlobal Telehealth Network 2017 - PresentThe Global Telehealth Network (GTN) is a nonprofit organization of volunteer physicians and psychologists who provide free, real time, online video consultations for health workers in medically underserved areas when they encounter patients with complex medical, surgical or mental health problems. GTN also offers free use of its technology to develop regional telehealth networks that not only enable doctors to obtain in-country specialty consults, but also allows them to supervise nurses in remote areas who currently have no physician backup. Meanwhile, GTN’s international panel of professional volunteers can fill any gaps in expertise with 24/7 availability. We're currently launching pilot programs in Kenya and Uganda that provide solar power systems and Internet connectivity to allow access to consultations for physicians working in three rural hospitals and for nurses in four community health clinics and two school health clinics. In addition to improving healthcare services, this new infrastructure allows access to valuable resources for education and economic development.Meanwhile, we're collaborating with other NGOs to develop additional programs in Kenya and Uganda, as well as in Tanzania, Liberia, Nigeria, the Philippines, the Galápagos Islands and the U.S. (beginning with urban free clinics and rural Tribal Lands), as well as in disaster areas and conflict zones, including Ukraine and Syria.By providing telehealth technology for use by physician volunteers and developing a network to connect them with health workers in underserved areas, GTN can offer services to individuals and families with the greatest need but most limited access to care.GTN is also collaborating with IEEE Smart Village and other organizations to develop Community Resource Centers that not only reduce health disparities, but also address many more of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty in the world.

Vice PresidentChild Health And Aids Prevention (Chap) (Formerly Known As "Los Altos Rotary Aids Project") 2001 - PresentFounded in 1989, the goal of the Child Health and AIDS Prevention Project is to engage Rotarians in the fight against HIV/AIDS through a variety of programs and projects, currently focusing on prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS in Africa and Asia. Our Child AIDS Prevention (CAP) project in Liberia - conducted in partnership with Save the Children - provides counseling and voluntary HIV testing for expectant mothers. About 4% of pregnant women in Liberia carry HIV, but most are not aware that they are infected. Through the CAP Project, those who test positive for HIV are treated with anti-retroviral drugs for the remainder of their pregnancy and beyond, and their babies are treated for the first six weeks of their lives to prevent infection.Without this intervention, 1/3 of mothers with HIV will pass it on to their infants. Of the infants who are infected, 1/2 will die by the age of 2 years and 3/4 will not survive beyond 5 years. Of those who survive, many will soon become orphans. However, if HIV-infected mothers and their babies are treated, 98% of those children will remain free of HIV, and most of their mothers will survive to raise them.Save the Children is continuing implementation of the Child AIDS Prevention program in Liberia. Meanwhile, the Child Health and AIDS Prevention Project has expanded the CAP program to Tanzania and Nepal.http://www.rotaryaidsproject.orgAn article in the May 2012 issue of The Rotarian magazine provides an excellent description of our Child AIDS Prevention (CAP) project at http://www.rotaryaidsproject.org/images/downloads/Special_Deliveries_Rotarian_Mag_May_2012.pdf
