About Jackie Webb

Jackie Webb is an environmental scientist specializing in issues relating to water quality of aquatic systems in agricultural landscapes. Her particular expertise resides in ecosystem biogeochemistry, with a focus on hydrological monitoring, carbon and greenhouse gas accounting, and development of quantitative models to solve environmental issues. Previous positions include working as a casual academic within the School of Agricultural and Wine Sciences at Charles Sturt University and as a postdoctoral researcher working on the carbon and GHG balance of agricultural dams at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. Jackie completed her PhD at Southern Cross University in Australia where she studied carbon cycling in agricultural floodplains. Her main research focus has included integrating carbon cycles between terrestrial and aquatic systems, carbon dioxide and methane biogeochemistry in fresh to coastal waters, hydrology and groundwater tracing, greenhouse gas fluxes, and stable isotopes. For four years Jackie worked as a research fellow at Deakin University Centre for Regional and Rural Futures where she conducted applied research on soil health, crop nutrient cycling, and the carbon footprint of water infrastructure in irrigated farming systems.in 2024 she embarked on a new journey at the University of Southern Queensland as a Lecturer in Environmental Science

Conduct greenhouse gas analysis on agricultural dugouts in SaskatchewanProject goal: Mitigation of climate change has become an important societal priority. Agricultural activities are currently responsible for approximately 18% of Saskatchewan’s greenhouse gas emissions, thus there is a critical need for farmers to have tools to achieve carbon-neutral farming, while maintaining agricultural productivity. Agricultural dugouts on Saskatchewan farmland may already serve as substantial carbon sinks, but the magnitude of carbon capture has not been fully evaluated, particularly for complex greenhouse gas (GHG)mixtures (e.g., methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O)).This project aims to 1) Measure GHG capture (or release) by dugouts by measuring C burial and fluxes of CO2, CH4, N2O duringsummer, 2) Measure how GHG capture (or release) by dugouts variesamong seasons during the ice free season (early spring – fall), 3) Compare rates of GHG capture (or release) in dugouts with those measured for natural wetlands, and 4) Determine best practices for maximizing greenhouse gas capture and storage (and minimized release) in Saskatchewan farm dugouts

Constraining carbon budgets in ecosystems at the terrestrial-aquatic interface remains an incomplete yet evolving area of research today. Recurrent shortcomings that have been identified mostly stems from the difficulty in linking terrestrial and aquatic measurements together, and capturing important events that drive aquatic carbon fluxes. The overarching hypothesis for this dissertation is that the aquatic carbon pathway will play an important role in the net ecosystem carbon budget (NECB) of the system and that large precipitation events will drive most of this annual carbon loss. To address this hypothesis, the study aims to evaluate the fluxes of carbon within and between the terrestrial and aquatic components of a catchment-scale carbon budget, and to resolve the role and function of the aquatic carbon pathway in a managed floodplain landscape. Therefore, this work will utilise an integrated approach involving an array of measurements and techniques to link terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycling.
