Stories are really important to me. Like Lorelei Gilmore craves coffee, I'm always interested in a good story and what we can learn from it. I value reflective and strategic companies that feel the same way. As a leader, I believe stories are paramount to understanding your workforce. An individual's personal story about why and how he or she works lets you know what makes them tick, and also allows you to forge a working relationship based on respect. Stories open up communication lines and allow a leader to motivate, encourage, coach and collaborate. As a learning professional, I have seen tales and anecdotes literally open the eyes of a sleepy audience and give them that "ah ha" moment that leads to learning engagement. I have watched user metrics jump when real life is involved, and know that making the learning as real as possible leads to the best transfer for the learner. As a communicator, telling a story that keeps the audience engaged so they can get the necessary message means you're doing your job. I relish learning someone's story so that I can put it in the spotlight for a new audience. I believe my experience in all these areas comes back to my lifelong love of stories. As a leader and an individual contributor, I see some of my favorite characters in my own work ethic: the elementary loyalty of Dr. Watson and the ability to build a relationship like Anne Shirley.
