As one of nine centers under the non-profit North Carolina AHEC system, Eastern AHEC provides continuing education and other resources to healthcare professionals throughout their careers. With the purpose of strengthening healthcare in eastern NC by nurturing current and future providers, Eastern AHEC serves 23 counties in the region. I worked to ensure a consistent message across all alumni association publications and marketing materials sent to alumni, friends of the university, the general public and the media. I wrote and edited EC Alumni quarterly magazine and the ECUpdate monthly e-newsletter. I also publicized events, wrote press releases and served as the association's media contact.

I covered Pitt County Schools and East Carolina University, exploring educational issues such as curriculum developments, student/teacher diversity, school boundary redistricting, university reorganization, campus expansions, lockdowns and safety concerns, budget cuts, graduation/attendance/retention rates, test results and more. I directed news coverage and furthered readership for this weekly community newspaper. I designed the front page and edited all 8-12 pages per edition. I also selected and wrote several stories per week along with taking photos and laying out interior pages. I wrote stories of all kinds covering politics, education, crime, business, and human interest. In overseeing the production of the town's annual tourism magazine, I selected, wrote and edited stories and designed page layouts.
