Lions Gift of Sight (formerly Minnesota Lions Eye Bank) is a 501(C)3, operating within the University of Minnesota with a mission to help restore sight through eye donation. Founded in 1960 by the Minnesota Lions and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota, the eye bank provides over 1,400 corneas for transplant and over 1,700 eye tissues for research annually - thanks to the generous gifts of eye donation from people in our community. I served as CEO/Executive Director my last 12 years here. During that time we grew our core mission by distributing more corneas for transplant while also expanding services to meet unmet needs. We maintained a razor sharp focus on our customers (cornea recipients, donor families, and corneal surgeons, local hospitals, funeral directors/cremation providers and more) began offering pre-cut human eye tissue for transplant and launched the first ever peer-reviewed journal online so eye banks have a specific place to publish (and thus share) their work and research.
