In this role I am responsible for managing my task list; prioritising tasks by deadline/importance but ensuring all tasks are completed within the required timeframe.I create briefs for Counsel in Appeals Against Sentence and Committals for Sentence. This involves assembling a bundle; drafting a brief document; telephoning chambers to instruct Counsel (and recording instructions on the Brief Tracker); and chasing the Court/Police for any missing documentation.I update the Case Management System following hearings, ensuring that it accurately reflects what has happened at each hearing, as well as recording the work I have done on the matter.I also undertake work at Court; such work can include preparing jury bundles; answering telephone queries; and speaking to witnesses at Court; making enquiries of police, witnesses, and the Court; and playing multimedia evidence in court.

In this role I have paralegal experience in both the criminal defence department and in the family law department.As a criminal defence paralegal, I have taken instructions from clients; communicated with the Police and HMCTS, in person, online and by telephone; attended court and sat behind Counsel; and drafted court documents.As a family law paralegal, I have taken instructions from clients, both in person and over the telephone, and advised them. I have experience with Legal Aid Agency applications. I have advised clients at Public Law Outline meetings and I have drafted statements, applications, and other Court documentation. Both roles also involve general administrative duties, such as taking attendance notes, time recording, writing memos etc.

I was responsible for leading a project within the Solicitor's Office to assess the extent to which the University is compliant with the GDPR in relation to data processing agreements.This involved a three-stage process:1. Collating information from various mediums (such as documentation, correspondence, meetings and telephone calls) and with various parties (such as colleagues, clients and interested parties) in order to assess the current overall position. I then created an Access database which links into a spreadsheet, in order to provide useful metrics as to the progress of the project.2. Developing a mechanism to prioritise matters, and then assessing the effectiveness of this.3. Actioning matters according to their priority. This could includes assessing the nature of the relationship (i.e. Controller to Controller (Joint), Controller to Controller (in-common), Controller to Processor); reviewing the other party's data processing agreements or drafting a data processing agreement; negotiating with the other party to amend terms where required; and sending the agreed agreement for signature.I also assisted with non-project related work in order to support my colleagues where requested.

These included:- drafting correspondence: this could include writing a letter to a client, an email to the defendant, and a memo to colleagues, all relating to the same subject matter but with their contents adapted for each recipient;- drafting legal documentation, such as Letters Before Action;- liaising and communicating with colleagues, clients, and defendants:- prioritising my workload, in order to ensure that more urgent matters were actioned first, whilst ensuring other matters were still progressed in good time;- attending meetings, for example with medicolegal experts- attending training; and- conducting legal research.

Serving as a Volunteer Police Cadet allowed me to gain a useful insight into policing and the law, and put that insight into practice operationally. My experience as a Volunteer Police Cadet, and later, as a Senior Volunteer Police Cadet, reinforced my passion to go into the law.While representing South Yorkshire Police, I attended the National Volunteer Police Cadet Conference, and the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire's Summer Reception. For my work I received a Best Endeavour Award from South Yorkshire Police and a letter of thanks from the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire.
