I have been an advocate for the marine environment since I was 8, even though I lived in the landlocked prairies. I received my BSc in Marine Biology from Dalhousie in 2004 and my RPBio designation in 2013. I am a promoter for the marine environment via education and conservation. And yes I am a whale nerd and now a marine bird nerd.As a marine naturalist, I share my passion for marine mammals and their environment with whale watching guests. A trip could include 35 to 45 passengers learning about the marine wildlife off Vancouver Island and the conservation issues surrounding them.I worked on many projects implementing regulatory guidelines for marine mammals on seismic vessels throughout the US, UK, Canadian Arctic, and Africa. I was selected by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to mitigate for sound on geophysical projects in BC. I wrote final reports for governmental and environmental agencies. As a marine scientist, I led 23 out of 38 hands-on field programs. I ran the health, safety and environment orientation and daily safety meetings for these programs. I worked collaboratively with a variety of Coastal BC First Nations on marine studies further expanding my knowledge. These diverse backgrounds and viewpoints created more beneficial and relevant environmental documents.Through my roles, I am competent in identifying marine invertebrates, fishes, birds, and mammals. I am proficient in working on a range of vessels. I have operated small vessels around marine mammals following “Be Whale Wise” in the Pacific Northeast. My marine-related field skills are transferable to conducting wildlife field programs, due to my understanding and ability to implement survey protocols.Specialties: marine wildlife identification, survey protocols, marine mammal monitoring & mitigation, marine and shore-based data collection, data management & analysis, report preparation, application for scientific collection permits, marine wildlife sightings mapping, and teamwork.
