About Jack H. Raisanen

I envision a world that is ecologically sound and socially just and am working to get us there. Thriving life for all, within planetary boundaries. I am guided by intersectional feminism, nonoppression, decolonization, and deep ecology in my work and practice.I am an Environmental Planner and have earned a Bachelor of Natural Resources (Sustainable Coastal Management), Bachelor of Elective Studies (Liberal Studies, Minor in Geography), and Associate of Arts (Liberal Arts and Sciences). Now I am continuing my education in the Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences and the Master's Programme in European and Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki.I completed courses and internships with nine institutions in six countries during my undergraduate studies alone. Everything from urban development to coastal ecology, philosophy to human relations, economics to world politics, and economic geography to conservation biology. A summer of ecology field work in the forests and mountains of Norway. Pacific oyster research on the West Coast of Sweden.One of my biggest motivations is and always has been learning. I love combining my existing knowledge, discovering more, and coming up with new ideas. I share information and my knowledge with others and affect positive change with joy. I see the big picture, dive into and understand the details, and communicate and teach this to others.The scientific method is very important to me. I bravely question myself and others. I am an excellent problem solver, critical thinker, and innovator. I synergize and utilize my myriad and international education, work, and volunteer experiences as sources of inspiration. I am accurate, high achieving, and produce high-quality work.I have made a home in Helsinki after moving from the United States to explore my background. English is my native language. Based at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory in 2017 and Kristineberg Marine Research Station in 2018.Research team leads Ane Timenes Laugen, PhD & Åsa Strand, PhD are currently at the University of Agder and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute, respectively.Worked in a team and completed surveys at many locations. Collected information about oyster presence population size, and age. I also collected muscle tissue in-field from Pacific oysters for future DNA testing and communicated with passersby about the research. The work was intensive and the days sometimes long. I greatly enjoyed being outdoors completing the field work.

Returned in September 2018 and May 2019 and carried out vole population tracking in a remote mountain valley independently.“Investigating micro-habitat selection behavior of grazing cattle in Norwegian forests”:Collected and recorded biotic and abiotic information about canopy cover, visibility, animal droppings, habitat type, and incline from resting and grazing locations, as well as control sites. Made in-field decisions about data collection procedures in response to changing and varied outdoor conditions. Lived and worked closely as a team in the wilderness.“Bilberry forest management practices for reduced browsing of Norway spruce by Eurasian elk”:Tested and recorded soil sample pH and water holding capacity as part of a research project to understand ideal growing conditions for forest bilberry plants.
