Negotiated settlement for a telecommunications client that reduced a sales tax assessment from $700,000 to less than $100,000.• Taught various classes, including state tax classes for clients, Lorman Educational Services, the NCACPA, and for Elliott Davis professionals.• Performed nexus studies which involved determining if a client had nexus for various taxes in various states, calculating potential liability, determining overall risk of not complying, and making recommendations regarding compliance.• Provided tax planning including assistance in determining entity type and structure, structuring transactions, determining and understanding risk, and developing the proper balance between business and tax benefits.• Managed the property tax compliance function for the Charlotte office. Served a wide variety of clients including high technology companies, manufacturers, nonprofits, hospitals, and many others.Specific Accomplishments:• Performed large research projects for multi-state organizations. Some of these projects involved unique entity structures (i.e. nonprofit charitable trust) and unique business models.• Obtained millions of dollars of refunds for clients through reverse audits, which involved review of client records in the same manner as a taxing authority auditor with the goal of identifying overpayments.• Provided nexus consulting to determine the state tax filing requirements of clients and provide them with the information necessary to make business decisions regarding with which taxes to comply.• Delivered extensive state tax consulting and compliance for tiered LLC structures as well as partnerships and S-Corporations. • Attained millions of dollars in property tax refunds for clients and a $1,000,000 leasehold excise tax refund by obtaining property tax exemptions and representing clients in property tax appeals.• Worked extensively with public and nonprofit hospitals, including creating complex tax reporting templates, managing tax audits and appeals, and recommending changes in corporate structure and inter-entity transactions.

As a Revenue Auditor I worked independently to audit the accounting records of businesses determining compliance with state sales, use, and B&O tax laws and ensuring the appropriate amount of tax was paid.
