I am a passionate believer in the ability to solve serious problems through technology. A engineering specialist with 17 years of experience in developing new and non-traditional solutions to real problems. My career has evolved to look at human machine interaction, dedicated mechanical & electrical systems, and medical device compliance. I believe in a systems approach to solving problems - technically amazing hardware without fundamental understanding of the real root of the problem is no solution, and without technical expertise, even the most brilliant ideas will fall short. I am currently on a leave of absence from a PhD at the Delft University of Technology, while growing my spin-off company, Innovative Mechatronic Systems to continue developing the revolutionary Archimedes Drive. Our goal is nothing less than to completely overturn the current gearbox world. Before I joined the team at Delft, I worked as project lead on one of the most promising human-machine interfaces, the IMES implantable myoeletric sensor as part of the DARPA Revolutionzing Prosthetics project. We developed a completely wireless injectable microimplant capable of simultaneously controlling up to 8 degrees of freedom in advanced cybernetic limb systems. Specialties: Human-Robot interaction, electromechanical product design and engineering, actuator design, medical implant design, and regulatory compliance.

Phd Candidate (Deferred)Delft University Of Technology Mar 2011 - PresentDelft, NlI have always been fascinated by humans working with, and augmented by machines. My first research field was prosthetics, specifically trying to bring signals out of the body to control highly complex electromechanical hands. My current field of work is exoskeleton design. Here, I am trying to understand how humans can work with augmentive technologies, to see how the way we move is changed by the systems we interact with. I am specifically working on building a powered lifting exoskeleton for the healthcare field which is designed to be automatically adjusting, and require no training or adaptation to learn how to use.I have had the good fortune to work with outstanding researchers at the Loyola University Medical Center, University of Southern California, The Alfred Mann Foundation, the Rehabiliation Institute of Chicago, University of Utah, Northwestern University, DARPA, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the University of Twente, and the Technical University, Delft. -
Research ManagerRehabilitation Institute Of Chicago Jan 2007 - Mar 2011Chicago, Illinois, UsAt RIC I started as an engineer and regulatory affairs specialist, with oversight over the IMES implantable myoelectric stimulator. The goal of my tenure there was to establish a cGLP system withing the Center for Bionic Medicine, and to bring the IMES through animal trials to human trials. We successfully performed the first in-vivo testing of the IMES implants, including short term perfomance studies and long term reliability studies.During this period, Dr. Richard Weir, the PI with which I was working, left for a position in Boulder, Colorado. I took over day-to-day management of the lab, with Dr. Weir & Dr. Todd Kuiken supervising the scientific output of the lab. -
