Working on one of the most crucial races in Illinois's 2022 midterms was an indescribably valuable experience. My biggest responsibility as a Field Coordinator was allocating the appropriate amount of time and resources to other campaigns and local parties so as to reach as many voters as possible. All campaigns have the same goal, provided they run on the same platform, so it is crucial for them to work together. Gaining experience in local politics, campaign law and door-to-door canvassing has given me skills that I look forward to using in my next occupation, political or apolitical!

As the Remote Coordinator of WZND, I was responsible for completing necessary paperwork, coordinating with other departments, and ensuring that all the needs of a client would be met. With every scheduled remote, I would gather all the necessary equipment, ensure that it was set up correctly and our music was playing at a comfortable volume for the venue. I very much enjoyed servicing clients and gaining sales experience.

My duties as co-host and producer include updating the community on local and national events, thinking of entertaining recurring content and maintain a reliable schedule for it to be aired, all the while ensuring all popular music gets played. Waking up at 6 A.M. to perform a consistently high quality show five days a week is as challenging as it is rewarding.

As a student reporter for 103.3 WZND, I wrote and broadcast weekly newscasts in our hourly news schedule. A typical shift would include arriving an hour before the newscast so as to have enough time to write it, identify which story has been designated for that specific hour, prepare an introduction and actuality, and finally give a report on sports stories. This position gave me a strong understanding of how to keep a timely news schedule, identify what stories would be the most intriguing for an audience to hear and how to write both news and sports stories.

In this position I have learned the best strategies for interviewing, how to tell an intriguing story in both print and broadcast mediums, how to record and produce high quality audio and how to efficiently observe a community to timely report news when it occurs. My current duties with WGLT include recording newscasts and occasionally reporting.

As a reporter for this station, I wrote and recorded local stories. These stories typically involved the COVID-19 pandemic, but in a range of different contexts. Stories I produced in this role involved education, agriculture, entrepreneurship, even police brutality. I, singlehandedly, reached out to prominent members of the community, established times for a recorded phone interview, wrote engaging questions for those interviews, then recorded and edited audio to produce a story that would be broadcast on air. This role taught me a great deal about community outreach, time management and most of all, determination.
