I am an interdisciplinary scholar conducting scientific research to inform sustainable management of natural and farmed aquatic environments and is motivated by the need to increase food security. Examining the diversity of aquaculture in CA reveals their close ties to natural resources, threatened by coastal habitat degradation, human expansion, and environmental challenges like water quality, scarcity, and climate change-induced stressors (heat, drought, ocean acidification). My research program has evolved over the last few years, as a reflection of my role as the Statewide Cooperative Extension Aquaculture Specialist. I address these critical statewide issues by collaborating with and informing stakeholders, including west coast finfish, shellfish, and seaweed producers, local/state/federal resource managers, military, port and harbor managers, CA fishery and agriculture commissions, and environmental organizations.My research program centers around my interests in the application of technology to address challenges and improve sustainable freshwater and marine aquaculture for CA and the Western US. More specifically I have focused my applied research and extension activities on two critical and timely themes of sustainable aquaculture: 1) Increasing sustainability and animal welfare in finfish aquaculture and 2) The effects of climate change on marine invertebrate conservation with a focus on the reproductive biology of cultured shellfish. My research reflects the stakeholder needs of the region's aquaculture sector, including natural resource agencies, and regularly provides scientific expertise that has immediate application and impacts in my field.
