Profile bio

About Jackson Mace

I studied neuroscience at the University of Delaware for my undergraduate degree, where I took part in a wide array of clubs, honors societies, and volunteer groups. I held teaching positions and worked in various research settings. I was a member of the Griffin Lab from 2016-2020 during the academic years, where I studied the neural circuitry underlying spatial working memory. I pursued a senior thesis focused on understanding how projections from the nucleus reuniens to the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus dictate working memory processes from a neurophysiological perspective. In the summer of 2018, I participated in the Delaware Summer Scholar research internship at the Nemours Hospital for Children in Delaware, where I studied drug approaches to treat a rare form of bone cancer. In the summer of 2019, I took part in the Amgen Summer Scholar research internship at Washington University in St. Louis, where I studied a gene therapy approach to mitigate neurodegenerative pathology that occurs in Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy. After college, I joined the Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) Ph.D. program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2020. As a first-year research rotation student, I studied a novel cell death pathway involved in neurodegeneration under Drs. Ted/Valina Dawson, neurotoxic astrocyte pathology in ALS under Dr. Nicholas Maragakis, and the mechanisms of a reactive microglia inhibitor in mitigating multiple sclerosis pathophysiology under Dr. Peter Calabresi. After passing my qualifying exam, I committed to a thesis lab in 2021 and chose to work under the co-mentorship of Dr. Peter Calabresi and Drs. Ted/Valina Dawson. Outside of research at the Johns Hopkins University, I take part in the graduate school executive board, the biotechnology team (Hopkins BioTech Network), the science expansion group (Project Bridge), the graduate teaching association (Hopkins Teaching Academy), the interdepartmental journal club (Hopkins Neuroimmunology Team), and teaching assistant roles. After graduate school, I will continue studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases with a focus on neurodegenerative and neuroimmunological diseases. I hope to contribute toward treating these diseases with genetic and/or pharmacological manipulation-based therapies. Eventually, I plan to work as a biotech/industry research scientist at one point in my career and as a principal investigator of a research institute laboratory at another point.

Listed skills include Research, Neurobiology, Cell Biology, Leadership, and 46 others.
