I worked in the Fox lab on a kinetic model of the fatty acid synthesis pathway in E. coli. I expanded the model encompass several useful oleochemicals, which then allowed us to try and explain and predict unexpected experimental results found in our lab and in the literature. My work has led to first authorship on a journal article published in Biotechnology & Bioengineering, and was featured as an editors choice article. I also presented these findings at the ACS conference in San Diego in March, 2022. I completed a senior thesis during my final year of college through this research.

I worked within the Thermodynamics Research Center performing data capture of thermodynamic properties of organic compounds. This involved reading papers in literature and capturing their data into our internal software for analysis. Often, these papers are still in the manuscript stage and the initial data capture is to help the authors and publishing companies determine if their data is accurate enough to publish. Other tasks involved naming and drawing organic compounds, ensuring data sets were completely defined, and deciding if data is reasonable and worth capturing even before the professional analysis is performed. My most recent project was capturing as much interfacial tension data for organic compounds as I could find in literature. I also trained newer interns, providing feedback on their work before it was sent to our supervisor.

I worked on the beginnings of a project to create a soybean plant that can produce limonene, a fragrant molecule that gives a citrusy smell and flavor. My duties for this involved performing flux balance analysis, designing plasmids and primers, and executing PCR and gel electrophoresis protocols.

I assisted with biophysics research utilizing TIRF (total internal reflection fluorescence) microscopy. I aligned laser systems and analyzed the kinetics of a 40A hairpin using TIRF software.

I worked in the instrument repair shop, main warehouse, and made deliveries while traveling to schools to demo band and orchestra instruments, teach the students to make their first sounds, and rent them to the families. Contract writing, sales, communication, customer service, timeliness, flexibility, and teaching were all learned skills from this job.
