My name is Jackson Durant. I am a computer science student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In the past, I have worked an extremely diverse number of jobs. I've been a line cook at Grand Traverse Pie Co, an assistant tennis pro at Georgetown Country Club, and even a shipt driver during Covid. These jobs have given me an extremely diverse work experience that I try to leverage in my current job but also in my day-to-day life. Currently, I work on campus in my residence hall at the RSD desk. At the moment I am knowledgeable of 4 programming languages. I first learned java through three classes (two that I took at UMass Amherst). The first two of the classes were very basic and were an overview of programming as a whole. The third class however was oriented around learning the various data structures that one can use in java and how to implement them; this class was called Data Structures (Java). Since then I have taken a javascript class that focused on teaching the syntax of javascript while also focusing on the use of other concepts such as arrow functions and higher-order functions. This class also focused on data and how it is stored in the computer with concepts like garbage collection. This javascript class was called Programming Methodology (Javascript). Finally, I will be taking two C courses in the spring semester of 2022. These courses are named Computing System Principles (C) and Programming In C (C). By the end of the spring 2022 semester, I will have also taken calc 3 and two programming-based math classes called Introduction to Computation and Probability Under Uncertainty. In the spring 2022 semester, I will be also taking two python courses taught online most likely by the University of Michigan. Academically (as it relates to computer science) that is where I stand today. I believe that I would be a strong asset to any software engineering or programming-based team. I have a constant urge to learn and challenge myself in new ways. For example, over the Covid-19 epidemic, I had been a drought of learning or competing. I filled this space by learning chess, and since the days I started, I have pushed close to a 1500 rating. I point this out only to show that I truly love to learn and challenge myself. I believe as a student that had to be taught online and during a pandemic that an internship would be difficult, but that is exactly why I would like one. I wish to learn and challenge myself inside the industry, and maybe even gain a leg up on students around me. Who instead of using Covid as a motivator, use it as a crutch.
