College Of Charleston Public Safety

The College of Charleston Fire/ EMS is a student-run EMS system supervised by the college's department of public safety. In 2014, C of C EMS was ranked as the 2014 National Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year. The C of C EMS responds to BLS calls among students, visitors, and staff of the campus community.

Charleston County EMS is an ALS service responding to all medical calls within Charleston county. Charleston County EMS responds to over 50,000 calls for service each year covering over 1,100 square miles. EMS divides the county into three geographically separated divisions each with 4-5 ambulances and a supervisor on duty at all times.

A subset of the Low Country FEMA and DHEC branches, the MRC/PHRC serves as a host for first responders and other volunteers to receive emergency training and serve the community in the presence of an emergency.

Lake Wylie, Sc

Started in 1980, this volunteer focused Emergency Medical Squad is a non-profit, 501c3 that serves the Lake Wylie, SC community. I began working at River Hills EMS as a Junior First Responder assisting the EMT's and Paramedics in the field. Through rigorous training, I learned first aid, field procedures, and truck maintenance. At the age of 16, I became a first responder and assisted the board of the organization to reconstruct its social media presence to attract new volunteers and develop a stronger relationship with the community. The following summer I graduated from EMT school at CPCC in North Carolina and will continue to serve River Hills as an EMT-B/ EVO as I progress in my education.

College Of Charleston Public Safety

As an employee of the public safety department, I work as a CPR and BLS instructor to expand and certify the faculty and student population's knowledge of emergency action in dire situations. I am certified by the American Heart Association as a BLS provider.

As Student Director of CofC EMS, I created the Hands-Only CPR program as an initiative to create a healthier campus community through CPR instruction. The program is based on that of Duke EMS and would not have been a possibility without the support of the Duke EMS team, CofC Public Safety, and the AHA. As program director, I developed a needs assessment of the issue and developed a program plan both for the public health initiative and the policy implementation plan. The CofC EMS team hopes to partner with the CofC Public Health Department in the coming months. Additionally, we are applying for a SURF grant to further our research into the correlation between bystander Hands-Only CPR and survivability rates.
