I TAed for an actuarial exam P preparations course at CSU. The instructor taught the course online and gave me the responsibilities of giving individual students one on one help when needed. I would hold weekly office hours where I would help students with problems that they didn’t know how to complete and explain concepts to the students that found them challenging. One reason I was selected for the position was my enthusiasm to share my experiences so far in the actuarial field, specifically, my recent internship at Empower Retirement and experience I’ve gained while passing three actuarial exams. Several times throughout the semester, the instructor would ask me to share my thoughts to the class on how I liked to study or how I would approach specific situations. My more technical responsibilities included proctoring and grading the weekly formula and content quizzes.

I completed the regulatory data request from the New York Department for Financial Services by manipulating tables and queries in Microsoft Access to compile all the information that the NYDFS needed into one table. I then compared the number of claims that would be submitted with the number of claims in the reconciliation tables to double check that I have accounted for all the information. A large focus of the internship was to research and write a paper about the retirement crisis in America and solutions that could be made to fix it. Solutions involved people individually saving more, proposed federal plans to encourage that behavior and most importantly, securing the solvency of the Social Security program. Currently, Social Security will become insolvent by 2035, at which time all benefits will necessarily be slashed by 20 percent if no changes are made before then. To secure solvency for the next 75 years, there are many different options available. I made my recommendation as central as possible politically as realistically, a bill drastic enough to secure the solvency of Social Security would need the approval of both sides to be passed. Therefore, I included conservative ideas like slowly raising the age one can start collecting social securities, with more liberal ideas such as an increase in taxes for the wealthy to help pay for the program. At the end of the internship I presented my conclusions to an Assistant Vice President and managers at Empower Retirement.
