Recently joined Dr. Ronna Hertzano's lab within the Section on Omics and Translational Science of Hearing (NIDCD). Currently investigating the protective effects of drugs against noise-induced hearing loss, as well as studying potential biomarkers of inner ear injury. Tasks include conducting auditory brainstem response (ABR) experiments, administering drugs to mice and monitoring hearing loss and recovery over time, performing cochlear dissections, and also staining and imaging inner hair cells. Additional focuses include developing novel experimental protocols, as well as attending weekly meetings with the audiology unit at the NIH clinical center to incorporate patient data into our translational research projects.

Investigated gene therapy delivery methods via cerebrospinal fluid to restore hearing in adult deaf mice. Also studied the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the glymphatic system by observing sleep-wake cycles in mouse models of AD. Tasks include performing brain-slicing with vibratome, imaging slices and whole brains with Montage, MVX, and confocal microscopes, collecting data using ImageJ, and statistical analysis and figure development with GraphPad Prism. Also developed protocols for analyzing mouse locomotive behavior under various experimental conditions using ANY-Maze software.

Held weekly office hours, assisted with setting up and proctoring lab practicals, and developed study tools for students to use throughout the course. Taught a full-length lecture on telencephalic structures to the class.

Held over sixty appointments dedicated to tutoring students one-on-one in the writing process.Facilitated weekly writing groups and workshops (e.g. CV/resume crafting, grant writing, personal essays) on campus to foster productive writing environments.

Led and facilitated journal clubs that aimed to introduce students to scientific writing by teaching them how to interpret and summarize research articles.

Examined the role of visual diagrams in influencing students’ learning and reasoning about genetic inheritance. Tasks included in-lab data collection with adult human subjects as well as the processing and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. Also helped conduct a separate field study at the Strong National Museum of Play to examine the impact of educational biology card games and parent-child conversations on children's understanding of animal life cycles and metamorphosis.

Developed lesson plans and led weekly recitations that covered course material. Held review sessions with other TAs and graded written exams.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Continued to collaborate with Dr. Nedergaard’s team at the University of Copenhagen during a study abroad experience in Denmark. Executed an independent research project that involved technical training on in vivo MR-DWI image analysis, as well as ex vivo μCT image acquisition and analysis using Mango (Multi-image Analysis GUI) and ITK-SNAP software. Designed own protocols detailing the 'whiceCT' stain-based μCT imaging of stress-induced ex vivo adult mouse brain samples.

Washington, D.C. & Boston, Ma

Participated in the first annual cohort of EPGRAD (Expanding the Pipeline to Graduate Research in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias), an NIH-funded summer research program. The first portion of the program took place at George Washington University: received didactic training in epidemiological and data science research methods, as well as career mentoring and training in RStudio programming.The experience continued at Boston University, where a collaboration began with the Framingham Heart Study Brain Aging Program to investigate if psychosocial wellbeing is neuroprotective against the risk of dementia.
