My most current adventure involves working as a full-time post-bacc research fellow at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) in Bethesda, Maryland, while applying to MD-PhD programs. Post-Bacc Irta Fellow: Hertzano Lab

Recently joined Dr. Ronna Hertzano's lab within the Section on Omics and Translational Science of Hearing (NIDCD). Currently investigating the protective effects of drugs against noise-induced hearing loss, as well as studying potential biomarkers of inner ear injury. Tasks include conducting auditory brainstem response (ABR) experiments, administering drugs to mice and monitoring hearing loss and recovery over time, performing cochlear dissections, and also staining and imaging inner hair cells. Additional focuses include developing novel experimental protocols, as well as attending weekly meetings with the audiology unit at the NIH clinical center to incorporate patient data into our translational research projects.

Research Assistant: Nedergaard Lab

Investigated gene therapy delivery methods via cerebrospinal fluid to restore hearing in adult deaf mice. Also studied the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the glymphatic system by observing sleep-wake cycles in mouse models of AD. Tasks include performing brain-slicing with vibratome, imaging slices and whole brains with Montage, MVX, and confocal microscopes, collecting data using ImageJ, and statistical analysis and figure development with GraphPad Prism. Also developed protocols for analyzing mouse locomotive behavior under various experimental conditions using ANY-Maze software.

Executed an independent research project that involved technical training on in vivo MR-DWI image analysis, as well as ex vivo μCT image acquisition and analysis using Mango (Multi-image Analysis GUI) and ITK-SNAP software. Designed own protocols detailing the 'whiceCT' stain-based μCT imaging of stress-induced ex vivo adult mouse brain samples.
