About John (Jack) Wilbur Iii
I joined the maritime firm of Fertig & Gramling after graduating cum laude with a Maritime Certificate from Tulane University School of Law. In my current role, I am the lead attorney on a variety of maritime cases. I have had the opportunity to take dozens of depositions, lead mediations, and attend numerous trials. In addition, I am well experienced in handling complex multi-million litigation consisting of hundreds of thousands of documents and numerous discovery issues. I was published in the Tulane Maritime Law Journal and was the Senior Business Editor of the Maritime Law Journal Vol. 45. Previously, I obtained a dual degree from Washington and Lee University in geology (B.S.) and global history (B.A.) with an East Asian Studies emphasis in Japanese minor. My work ethic, attention to detail, adaptability, and can-do attitude demonstrate my ability to operate on concurrent projects while producing results. As an undergraduate, I worked on a capstone involving the comparison of Japanese folklore to western folklore and the differences/similarities that these stories reveal in our respective cultures. Simultaneously, I worked on my Geology Senior Thesis examining how Olivella shells can be used as alternate environmental productivity indicators. This research was presented to the public and to a panel of geology professors. In 2016, after graduating with an Honor in East Asian Studies, I decided to make the choice to live and work in Kobe, Japan. There I taught English for two and a half years and continued to pursue my studies in Japanese. While working, I learned how to conduct various presentations in both English and Japanese, worked closely to foster international relationships, and communicated complex ideas in an easy to understand manner. Additionally, I helped coach the middle school basketball team and provided additional tutoring sessions before and after school to any student that requested it.I left my teaching position in order to attend The University of Tulane Law School in 2019. Over my first summer I excelled in maritime classes cosponsored by The Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law in Rhodes, Greece. Afterwards, I worked as a summer associate for Wicker, Smith, O'Hara, and McCoy P.A., in Jacksonville, Florida doing insurance defenses work.As a 2L, I pursued a rigorous course schedule, worked as a student attorney for the Tulane Environmental Clinic, was active member of the Tulane Maritime Law Journal, and was selected to be published in the Fall 2020 Tulane Maritime Journal.
