Associate Principal
Current*Enhanced Impact Protection Retrofit Helmet Liner*I secured funding for a $260k six-month SBIR Phase I project to demonstrate improved blunt impact performance of a retrofit helmet liner design for rotary wing aviator helmets without adding weight to the system. During the program, I acted as the case leader and our team was able to successfully demonstrate a design that achieved 20-50% improved blunt impact performance over the legacy system by leveraging our patented energy absorption material which I co-invented. We recently applied for the Phase II of the program and was granted $1.7M over 24 months to further develop the retrofit helmet liner.
Senior Technologist
Senior Technologist In Thermal-Mechanical Systems Group
Technologist In Protective Systems Group
Research and Development▪ Developed next generation helmet pad for the US Army under a $2MM contract by co-inventing a novel energy absorbing material for a helmet pad capable of absorbing 2x the blunt trauma (patent published).▪ Found optimal helmet pad insert material design for multiple military helmets by performing mechanical testing and analyzing over 250 material samples and helmets.Project Management▪ Oversaw end-to-end helmet pad production process: acquired over $80k worth of materials through vendor selection, managed in-house production by coordinating tasks of six technical staff members, and collaborated with vendors for product's finishing.▪ Increased in-house production rate by 5x via novel tooling/machine development and process optimization.Client Management▪ Secured $150k funding from TARDEC (US ARMY) by writing technology development proposal.▪ Generated $180k in sales with high potential for future revenue through licensing by tailoring helmet pads to specific technical needs of leading helmet manufacturer.▪ Facilitated preparation of final presentation and bi-monthly reports for US Army technology development program managers and relevant personnel interested in our technology development.▪ Attended various kickoff and out-brief meetings with US military leadership to answer technical questions.
Associate Technologist In Mechanical Systems Group
▪ Improved precision of battery coating process by designing custom encoder sensor device to directly measure the length of film being coated by +$50k machine.▪ Designed and prototyped ice breaking mechanism for a $700k US Navy funded project for development of a self-contained efficient ice machine with the capability to also bag and store ice.▪ Determined optimal operation parameters of custom sterling engine generator and multi-fuel burner through testing.
Undergraduate Researcher
The objective of this research position is to help facilitate in the development, testing, and validation of several active knee prosthesis designs.I designed and fabricated custom test fixtures to enable development of active knee prostheses. I used Solidworks to design the test fixtures and a combination of Waterjet, CNC mill, and other basic machine shop tools to fabricate the fixtures. In addition, I mentored two younger undergraduates in designing fixtures to facilitate in human subject testing of the active knee prostheses.I delivered several test fixtures to enable benchtop testing of the active knee-prostheses.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
The objective of this internship was to determine possible mounting locations and design of a battery pack for retrofitting a hybrid conversion system for Ford E-Series vans. I designed several battery pack configurations using Solidworks and researched the most common battery pack locations for existing electric vehicles. At the end of the internship, I delivered a report of several possible battery pack configurations and suggested locations for mounting along with the CAD models.
Materials Researcher
The objective of this research project is to acquire data to validate the research hypothesis that co-continuous composite materials could have improved mechanical properties. I used Solidworks to prepare test samples to be 3D printed with multiple continuous phases. I performed quasi-static compression tests on the samples using a Zwick mechanical tester. I also took high speed videos of these compression tests. I processed the resultant force-displacement data into True Stress-True Strain curves by writing MATLAB scripts. I performed additional experiments on the test samples such as shape recovery through heat treatment of the samples. The result of this research project is a provisional patent on the fabrication of these co-continuous materials and publication in Advanced Materials.Publication: L. F. Wang, J. Lau, E. L. Thomas, and M. C. Boyce, “Co-Continuous Composite Materials for Stiffness, Strength and Energy Dissipation”, Advanced Materials Feb 25 2011.Provisional Patent: Co-continuous Polymer Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Performance and Multi-functional Applications
