About Jaclyn John

Jaclyn received her B.S in Applied Physics at the UA, and is now studying optical sciences in the Polarization Lab, funded by NASA's FINESST Fellowship. Her research involves using LWIR spectro-polarimetry for remote sensing applications, including investigating its use in ice/water discrimination. Jaclyn has acted as a project manager for multiple instrument deployments on NASA scientific flights to study the thermal polarimetric properties of optically thin clouds for the purpose of understanding their microphysical properties and improving climate models. She has experience in calibration, system integration/testing, and data analysis. She is looking forward to learning more about atmospheric sciences, radiative transfer modeling, and data validation through the course of her dissertation research. Outside of classwork and research, Jaclyn enjoy reading, writing, volunteering at educational outreach events, traveling, and scuba diving!

  • University Of Arizona
    Supplemental Instruction (Si) Leader
    University Of Arizona 2020 - 2021
I created and lead 3 SI sessions a week for an Introductory Electromagnetism course by utilizing knowledge of the content to make study group activities. I helped students better understand the material and develop positive learning habits within a collaborative environment. I attended all lectures, acted as a TA for the discussion sections of the class, and professionally connected with students to build a rapport and encourage attendance of the SI sessions.
  • University Of Arizona
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
    University Of Arizona 2019 - 2021
I worked in John Schaibley's lab in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Sciences. I exfoliated 2-Dimensional Materials for the purpose of investigating their optical properties. My major project was done when I was a UROC Scholar in the UA Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium: Summer Research Institute (https://grad.arizona.edu/uroc/uroc). A description of the project is in the abstract below.
  • University Of Arizona Housing & Residential Life
    Front Desk Manager
University Of Arizona Housing & Residential Life 2018 - 2021
I supervised a staff of 16 Desk Assistants across two dorms. I organized and led monthly meetings, created the schedule, approved payroll hours, audited supplies, and solved problems creatively and efficiently as they came up. This was in addition to all responsibilities of a Desk Assistant, which included checking students in, issuing packages, and building a rapport with the residents of the dorm. I started as a Desk Assistant in Fall 2018 and was promoted to Manager in Spring 2019. I also worked as a Conference Manager in Summer 2021, where I booked rooms and managed reservations for participants of Housing’s Summer Guest Services and Conferences. These jobs provided me with excellent managerial and task delegation skills, which apply well in many technical settings.
  • Nerding
    Teacher'S Assistant
    Nerding 2018 - 2019
I supported certified teachers in running summer STEM classes for kids to promote an interest and understanding in science at a young age. I began this position as a volunteer, before being offered a part-time position.
