Process Chemist

Rochester, New York, United States

Responsible for the management, process improvement, quality control, and production of over 100 unique chemical processes. Working closely with production operators, development team, and quality assurance lab to produce high quality product. Highlights:• Maintained detailed records of production and analytical data utilizing control charts for process and quality control. Through statistical analysis of in-process parameters reduced the cycle time of a multistep organic synthesis by ~25% and increased standard yield by 8%. Optimized process operations to reduce type II muda resulting in the cycle time of 3 cGMP polymer coating fluids by 75%. • As part of a Quality Guard team, identified the root cause for a division wide quality issue which had resulted in >$300K in failed production syntheses.• Identified opportunity for process improvement in a key revenue generating thermal die which had seen 20 years of failed attempts at improvement. Designed and proposed a full factorial experiment to optimize purification and collection process. When brought to production scale, resulted in a 35% cycle time reduction, 12% solvent waste reduction, removed 2 ergonomic red tasks, and 17% cost reduction.• Through analysis of historical process data of a 9 step functionalized quinoline dye synthesis, identified and corrected process factors that had resulted in 13 years of off quality product netting a -$4.6M in yield loss. These improvements resulted in 8.6 kg (23%) yield improvement, 12 hours cycle time reduction, and waste reduction of 1 recrystallization, netting $93k cost savings per run.• Support R&D for new product development, commercialization, manufacturing facility relocation, and process scaling initiatives. Most notably resurrecting and relocating an irreproducible 20-year-old matte bead synthesis using different equipment. Process improvements across 3 runs, increased usable yield 200 fold (from 5% to 100% of historical expected yield).

Research And Development Chemist

Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States

Researched the effects of metallizing conditions of polyamide fabrics for conductive, antimicrobial, thermal signature, and LAB color value effects. Also assisted in identification of production issues resulting in depressed first pass yield. Highlights Include:• Supported the optimization of polyamide metalizing conditions using half fraction design of experiments and data analysis which helped to secure a stealth fabric military contract netting $4+M in revenue.• Designed and collaborated with engineering, operations, and development teams to construct a proprietary, low cost, portable, thermal regulation system for development reactors. This system resulted in a 10X reduction in temperature variance in development metallization reactors.• As the result of a company restructuring, production was unable to reproduce product quality for the company’s primary medical device fabric customer. As a member of a development fireteam, identified variation in process temperature, seed crystal structure, and analytical method as root cause of critical to quality parameters. Standardization of these factors resulted in an 82% improvement in metalized product quality.
