About Jacob B. Hansen

EDUCATION MANAGEMENT – As Head of Studies of the Molecular Biomedicine program, University of Copenhagen, I strive to build the optimal framework for educating the most knowledgeable, creative, motivated, experimentally skilled, collaborative, confident and employable graduates. I do this by an ongoing curriculum development, assessment of quality and content of courses, in close collaboration with study board, course coordinators, teachers, advisory board, department and faculty leadership and last but not least students.RESEARCH – My laboratory studies adipocytes (fat cells) and adipose tissue. We focus on the molecular control of differentiation, activation and metabolism of brown adipocytes. My interest in brown adipose tissue biology derives from the striking ability of brown adipocytes to counteract obesity and insulin resistance in experimental animals and the observation that active brown fat is present in many adult humans. In ongoing projects, we identify novel signal transduction components promoting human brown adipocyte function. Our aim is to uncover novel regulatory mechanisms through which brown adipose tissue can be exploited therapeutically.TEACHING – My teaching is within the areas of physiology (endocrinology), cell biology (signal transduction) and biochemistry (metabolism). I teach at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level.
