In my various roles at HI-EMA, I led the development and update of several state-level emergency management plans and documents and ensured that those documents met applicable State of Hawaii and federal legal requirements, HI-EMA, FEMA, and other professional standards including the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) standard. I was brought onto the Campus Safety team as a specialist in emergency management. My major responsibilities included: hurricane/flood/tsunami preparations, COVID-19 response and recovery planning, and web design for the department. I was also a member of the university’s Emergency Operations Center, Planning Section, Situational Unit. My role in the Situational Unit is to track COVID-19 trends, make recommendations based on those trends, and aid in the preparation and implementation of contact tracing and physical distancing protocols. During Hurricane Douglas, I managed the local evacuation shelter and implemented COVID-19 mitigation measures to keep all evacuees as safe as possible.

Our mission is to save students and BYU-Hawaii money, as well as increase sustainability and self-reliance on campus. I am responsible for a banana plantation that we run as part of promoting local sustainability. We produce around 1,000 pounds of bananas per month for the students and community of Laie, and we are on track to double production by September of 2020.

I was in charge of the maintenance of the gear used to give night paddle boarding tours of the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. The tour takes groups of up to ten tourists through the PCC lagoon on paddleboards with lights strapped to them. Various stops are made where legends are shared. Water damage is common with the lights, which means my job often involved fast thinking in order to fix whatever gear is malfunctioning. I also arranged all the tour materials the day of, placing and lighting torches and setting up lights for the guides to use.

I managed a four-person team that is responsible for all social on campus activities. It was my job to bring together all the necessary departments and companies in order to make events happen. Once we had an idea of what kind of event we want to do, I delegated responsibilities to my team and made sure that the coordinating work was done and that all plans are seen to fruition. I planned and ran weekly team meetings, and participated with my superiors in weekly interdepartmental meetings. One event of note which I led was the most ambitious opening social dance my department has ever done. I coordinated and negotiated prices with three DJ’s and multiple volunteer clubs in order to provide a new experience for the students. This event took several months to plan and execute, and attracted around a thousand students.

While working for Kumon, I would work one on one with students from K-12 with their math and English assignments from school, as well as assign and grade their Kumon coursework and tests. The coursework assigned ranged from coloring in shapes and letters to basic calculus and literary analysis. I was also the liaison between parents and the owners of the franchise, and managed the online gradebook for students. My manager was often sick, so she taught me how to take care of the daily operations of the franchise, including opening and closing, meeting with prospective students and parents to discuss the program, and basic timekeeping. When the franchise changed hands, I was able to train the new manager and her staff, making the transition as painless as possible.
