What does it mean to go the extra mile? As a former cross-country runner, I would know. During the summer and fall, we would run for miles and miles, pushing ourselves to the limit even if our bodies didn't want to. One practice, in particular, stands out to me. We had to run 2 miles to get to a hill and proceed to run a half mile up to the top of the hill. The team was supposed to end the run there and turn and head back. Everyone was already tired and exhausted, but a couple of other runners and I thought, why not run another mile? And that's what we did, we ran not one, but 1.5 miles longer up another hill, totaling the run at around 8 miles. This carries over into the workplace to go that extra mile. I can’t count the times when I have seen people just standing around, not doing anything productive If I have nothing to do, I'll find something to do. Even if it’s just little simple tasks. In my mind, if you're not doing something, you're not working. It's not too hard to keep yourself busy, you could help a coworker out with some of their jobs or prepare the workplace for the next day of work, there is always something that can be done. I have worked longer than planned many times, and even though it may be exhausting, I push through. An example of this is when some other co-workers and I had been cleaning tents all day and had not made much progress, the tent was heavy, very difficult, and awkward to clean (over 3000 square feet of tent top). At the end of the day, we all felt defeated; we had only gotten about half of the tent done, but despite that me and my dad(who owns the business) and I stayed late that day until 11 pm trying to clean the tent and eventually got the tent all clean. I was initially supposed to be done that day at 5, but when I'm needed, I'll stay. Those are some examples of ways I've gone the "extra mile", where I've kept myself busy and exceeded expectations to improve the workplace.
