Project summary:This project was a comparison study between Ohio lakes which have had algal bloom problems in the past. This study was carried out by carrying out field research to collect biotic and abiotic data from Silver Lake. Field research required operating a boat and using a probe and plankton nets to collect samples. All of the abiotic data such as pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, and nutrient availability were compared to previously collected data from Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Mary’s. The zooplankton and phytoplankton that were collected were quantified and identified down to the lowest possible taxa, then compared to data from the other two lakes. Silver Lake is a unique lake in Ohio that was formed by a glacier and has no surface water inlets, but is spring-fed. The central comparison between these lakes was focused on the amount of nutrients that could enter the system without a surface water inlet. I could then characterize the lake as a nutrient-poor oligotrophic lake.- Collaborated effectively with research advisor to develop a strong research question and project design- Tested water chemistry in the field and gained experience with machinery such as probes and boats- Collected and preserved plankton samples in the field while attaining sterilization and collection skills- Qualified and quantified samples into workable data while improving microscopy abilities- Analyzed compiled data graphically and statistically compared it to previous studies- Authored a research paper (unpublished) and presented research at two on-campus symposiums

Project Summary:Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are anadromous Pacific salmonids who most of their naturally producing communities are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. These juvenile fish, collected at sea from 10-15 miles off the mouth of the Columbia River, were examined for trophically transmitted parasites. The stomachs and intestines were examined under a microscope for parasites that have been living in the steelhead. The purpose of looking at parasitic infection is to determine how the fish are utilizing the freshwater habitat in which they mature and their feeding patterns. The main study question was how steelhead that originated in a hatchery differed from those born in the wild.- Conducted independent research project within a NOAA marine biology research laboratory- Worked in the lab 40 hours per week for 10 weeks enhancing research and analytical skills(microscope, data collection, paper writing, organization, sanitation, reading papers, etc.)- Examined salmon stomach and intestines for parasitic infection under a microscope- Honed written communication skills in order to record and effectively interpret research findings- Developed scientific paper writing expertise- Participated in University presentations of project findings for scientists, professors, students and the general public
