The risks predominantly occurred in Texas and Louisiana with a few occassions to handle complicated matters arising in Mexico where the insured was "instantly" arrested as Mexico views tort cases as both a civil and criminal offense.Interview, hire and direct defense counsel, experts and other legal professionals to defend the insured's interests.Assigned key role in mentoring, training and developing internal customers in the new claims program.

I served in the capacity of Sales and Underwriting for the first three years where I would assess the customer's background, his or her needs, underwrite the risk, price-it and close the deal.Transitioned to claims in 2000 where first position involved "no fault" insurance. Following several months of adjudicating "no fault" cases I was tapped to begin handling both "no fault" and 1st & 3rd party liability cases. Also learned parameters affecting Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage and how every state has a different set of laws controlling the way the claim is administered. I handled claims of increasing complexity up through my external transition to another company in 2005. Throughout my time here I served on various committees aimed at increasing morale, employee retention and job satisfaction.

Interesting career opportunity where I was hired as a "dock worker" at a non-union company during a strike. Overtime was abundant for the first month until I injured my toe with pallet-jack and got put on office-duty. When the toe healed shortly thereafter, the terminal manager kept me in the office where I learned general accounting, coding bills, hazardous material placarding, driver logs, dispatch, inspecting damaged freight/equipment, and working out amicable resolutions with the customer for missing/damaged freight. On infrequent occassions, I played yard hostler and once got to drive a PUP truck across town to drop it off for repairs. It was here that I learned the complex nature of the trucking industry and just how difficult it was for a driver to earn a living. While I have seen different cable shows regarding ice roads and ships playing with difficult seas, it could be said that the life of an ordinary driver in dry weather is just as challenging. You sit higher than most other vehicles, people target your truck for unlawful gains and you cannot easily stop one of these vehicles when someone decides they want your travel lane more than you do.

From the approximate ages of 5-18 and summers and spare-time thereafter, my father and grandfather took me to their various projects of building new homes, renovating old ones and handling light commercial projects.I learned about land prospecting, contract law, buyer behavior, general contractor and sub-contractor agreements, builder's risk insurance, purchasing, staging homes to sale, regulatory bodies, working with inspectors (each city has a different view on what is or isn't safe), and very entertaining folks who call on the industry to make a living. My father and grandfather taught me that "luck" is a result of hard work paying dividends.
