About Jake Feuerstein

I am currently a student enrolled in Lehigh's Integrated Degree in Engineering and Arts and Science honors program (IDEAS), and I am focusing in biochemical engineering and public health. I am most passionate about sustainable development using biotechnology. At Lehigh, I am a Global Social Impact Fellow researching sustainable biotech. Alongside other biologists engineers, and population health experts, I am helping to develop a cost-effective, rapid diagnostic tool for sickle cell disease that will be implemented in low/middle income countries. In August 2023, the team and I traveled to Makeni, Sierra Leone and conducted over 50 interviews to gain insight into healthcare education pathways, perceptions about sickle cell disease, and the sectors in which our device could be used.

    SicklED is a research group at Lehigh University aiming to create a context-specific, point-of-care sickle cell disease diagnostics device for Sierra Leone. We are currently developing an effective lateral flow immunoassay to diagnose those with sickle cell disease trait.Our long term goal is to implement this technology in low and middle income countries, starting in Sierra Leone, in order to decrease the high infant mortality rate in the Sub-Saharan region of the world. In addition, we are working with national policy-makers, advocacy groups, and medical institutions to create an end-to-end system for wholistic patient care and management by developing CMEs, SOPs, and general outreach materials.
