I am currently a freshman at the University of Maine. I am from Scarborough, Maine, and I graduated from Scarborough High School in 2020. When I was 16 years old, I got my first job as a dishwasher at an assisted living facility(The Enclave of Scarborough). After a couple months of being a dishwasher they moved me up to a part of the waitstaff. I was at The Enclave of Scarborough for 2 years, the global pandemic hindered me from wanting to continue working there. However, this was a great first job and an amazing overall experience. This experience allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, as first jobs can be intimidating, especially one when you're in a chaotic kitchen. This job definitely made me more patient and I also became more cultured. I was always surrounded by elderly who had very cool stories about there lives and I learned a lot about their backgrounds and general history. My second job was at Red Robin; I started in the summer of 2020 as a dishwasher. I soon got promoted to a line cook, which has been my best experience working to date. I learned to work on the fly and under stressful conditions, I soon realized how hard it is to work 10-12 hour shifts, sometimes multiple times a week. I made friendships that carried outside of the workplace. It has been the hardest yet most rewarding job I have worked, one of the most difficult parts was realizing you sometimes can only rely on yourself to get things done. Working in a kitchen is a team based mentality, where teamwork is crucial to success. However, relying on others to do work too or even just show up to work is just going to let you down. So a key takeaway for me from this job is to stay focused and do work and you will get rewarded. Soon there were not enough employees and It did not make sense for me to stay for the long run. My current job is at National Distributors, which I work in the summers and when Im home from school. At this job I am a devilry truck helper, meaning I travel with the truck driver to certain locations in Southern Maine. I am responsible for checking merchandise and packages. I also assist the driver unload and move equipment as well as deliver orders for customers. There are multiple aspects I love about this job; I am able to get paid for being outside in the summer, I travel and see new places throughout Southern Maine, and its a good job to stay active.
