About Jacob Harrison
My name is Jacob Harrison, and I'm a story teller and Occupational Therapist in the making. Story teller is probably the most succinct title I can think of. I write - fiction, non-fiction, copywriting, journalism and academic criticism. I'm a video editor, a content curator and videographer. I'm a teacher, a coach and an advocate for the power of story and communication to break down the perceived barriers that divide us. I'm an actor, a presenter and a model. I'm also an avid social media user, publisher and manager, and I enjoy bringing all my passions together to deliver digital content for an online environment. I have had the opportunity to be a teacher; to impart some of the technical skills I have gained, but more importantly to show students the power of their own stories and individual agency.I have started a new chapter to my story. As someone with lived experience of mental ill health, I have wanted to contribute to the discourses on mental health through my content. During Covid, I took an increased interest in the sphere of mental health, beyond that of a client of a service or an artist, and realised my lived experience could actually be valuable in the clinical space, and decided to retrain in Occupational Therapy at the University of Newcastle. My aspirations through my studies are to be a strong advocate for patient lead care in mental health, but also advocate what mental divergent perspectives can tell us about wider societal issues; as Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, ‘‘It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.’’. I want to show patients and the wider community their agency through the power of story, both as a device of healing and as a device of social change. I would like the opportunity to advocate for mentally divergent perspectives, as they often provide unique, lateral spaces for creating alternate solutions to novel problems, where society can see neurodiversity as a benefit rather than a drawback.I would like to work somewhere where I can utilse my compassion, communication skills and lived experience to make real differences to the lives of my clients. My goal is to work for an organisation where I can be challenged, where I can be proud of the work I am doing and the quality of the output, somewhere I can continue to learn, where I can contribute, commit and feel part of the organisation; an organisation where I can be part of their story. So, why do I love to tell stories?I love to tell stories because it is how I can make the world a better place.
Listed skills include Screen Editing, Camera Operation, Social Media, Research, and 33 others.
