Profile bio

About Jacob Herrmann

Currently, I am the Associate Director of the Center for Academic and Professional Communication (CAPC) at Rice University. The CAPC is a multi-modal communication center focusing on written, oral, and visual communication. We work with both undergrad and graduate students, as well as post-docs and faculty in any discipline. In my role at the CAPC, I am in charge of the training and ongoing professional development of a peer consulting staff made up of approx. 35 undergraduate and graduate student employees. I also provide classroom workshops on a variety of communication topics, such as writing personal statements and designing research abstracts, and assist the Director with various communications in the disciplines (CID) projects. In addition, I hold a courtesy faculty position in the Program in Writing and Communication where I teach First-Year Writing Intensive Seminars and other communication courses. Before joining Rice, I worked at the KU Writing Center. I served 3 years in administrative roles as the Administrative Intern and then as the Workshop Coordinator. As the Administrative Intern, I was responsible for the training and on-going professional development of approximately 30 consultants per semester. In doing so, I helped to develop materials for and lead new consultant orientation of both undergraduate and graduate students. As the Workshop Coordinator, I managed, trained, and scheduled 5-10 undergraduate and graduate students for over 200 workshops and class visits. In addition, I designed promotional materials for marketing the KUWC workshop program to instructors across campus, as well as developed a KUWC workshop assessment program for Undergraduate Studies. In my doctoral program, I was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of English at the University of Kansas, where I taught both writing and literature undergraduate courses. In Fall 2018, I taught ENGL 312: British Lit Writers to 1800 at Edwards Campus where I worked with non-traditional students from the Kansas City Area, many of whom were returning to KU after a gap in education. In my ENGL 102: Critical Reading and Writing course, I taught freshman and sophomore level students. As a KU Core course, I designed my class to not only teach collegiate level writing skills, but I intensely focused on issues of media literacy and social justice as related to issues of gender, sexuality, race, class, and (dis)ability. It is my strong belief teaching must be inclusive and adaptable, and these are also qualities I wish to instill in my first-year students.

Listed skills include English Literature, University Teaching, Proofreading, Editing, and 17 others.
