Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
CurrentI took BIOL 212 during the Spring 2022 semester and I now work as a PLM where I attend each lecture and facilitate student learning in the classroom. My goal as a PLM is to help students succeed in the class, enjoy the material, and encourage a higher level of thinking. I am assigned a section of the lecture hall which consists of students whom I assist and guide through the semester. During class, I set an example of what a strong learner is supposed to look like. I answer the students questions, encourage group discussion, and collect papers for the Professor. Outside of class, I attend a weekly meeting with the Professors and other Peer Learning Mentors where we discuss coursework and expectations. I also spend an hour a week at the Biology Help Center on campus where students can walk in and receive help regarding their Biology course content.
Undergraduate Researcher
CurrentI participate in Undergraduate Research under Dr. Duck-Chul Lee and Joey Saavedra through the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University. My work is in the Physical Activity and Aging Study (PAAS) which is a longitudinal, open cohort study that seeks to shed light on the many relationships that exist between physical activity, health, disease, and mortality in older adults. PAAS has given me experience in direct patient care as well as in the assessment of older adult health. My role in PAAS is to take peripheral blood pressure, perform body circumference measurements/Fit3D scans, and record height and weight of the participants. PAAS has provided me with a substantial amount of patient care experience as well as an opportunity to interact with older adults while assessing their physical health.
Honors Student
CurrentAs an Honors Student at Iowa State, I have expanded my academic experience in and outside of my major of Biology. I contract core Biology courses through the honors program which allows me to go beyond the material covered in class. In an honors course, I explore the content at a deeper level and perform additional activities related to the class. Outside of my major, the honors program gives me the opportunity to take an honors course outside of biology and also attend seminars over a topic of my choosing which further expands my knowledge outside of science. The honors program has given me experience in leadership as well as pushed me to fulfill my potential as a student at Iowa State.
Undergraduate Researcher
CurrentI attend weekly research seminars both in the lab and in the classroom through the Department of Kinesiology with Dr. Jason Gillette . In the lab, we analyze musculoskeletal injury mechanisms by using video, force, and gait analysis. In the classroom, we analyze our lab results and discuss other research papers and case studys.
Resident Assistant
CurrentAs a Resident Assistant, I live in the dorms at ISU where I advise and provide assistance for the residents living there. I have the opportunity to lead student volunteers in sub-committees such as House Cabinet and Hall Council. I've gained a substantial amount of leadership and time management skills as I've learned to balance my work with school and social activities. I've been able to transfer the skills I learn as an RA over to other aspects of life.
Student Associate
CurrentAs a student associate, I assist elementary aged kids who have special needs. I spend the whole school day with them where we work both 1 on 1 and in a group setting. I guide them through school work, support them around peers, and make sure they follow classroom expectations.
Lifeguard
As a lifeguard, I supervised and ensured the safety of patrons in and around the pool. I performed numerous underwater saves and general first aid assistance. I also taught deep-water swimming lessons.
