About Jacob Johnston
I am a graduate from Colorado School of Mines with a Mechanical Engineering PhD. My research primarily focused on the development of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models capable of simulating real world water filtration processes such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Membrane Distillation (MD). I wrote software in-house to tailor a numerical method towards accurate representation of the local phenomenon occurring in these systems. I have several years of experience programming in MATLAB and Fortran 90.I now work at Healing Waters International, where I have the opportunity to use my background in water filtration processes to facilitate the production of clean water in remote communities in Central America. At Healing Waters, I am the research and development and project engineer. I work with a team to design both ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis treatment systems that are tailored to operation in impoverished countries. During my time at HWI, I have already had the tremendous opportunity to travel to Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Haiti to participate in the installation and testing of our systems. There, I have learned about the challenges that are present working in the conditions found in these remote communities. I continue to gain insights into best engineering practices that our organization can put into place to be successful working with the locals, empowering them to be a part of addressing the water needs of their community.
Listed skills include Matlab.

R&D And Project Engineer
As the research and development and project engineer I design and propose tailored water filtration systems for unique water profiles in remote parts of Central America. I work as part of an international team addressing the challenge of bringing clean water to marginalized communities. I have had the opportunity to travel to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Haiti to work along side members of these communities and our local staff to install the systems that would begin to supply treated water for the families in the area. Many of our projects are located in places with no access to grid electricity, so I have also been able to learn a lot about solar power systems and their application in water pumping. Part of my research role has been to come up with ways to overcome the challenges often associated with solar water pumping. I have been excited to work on creating PLC programs that allow our systems to run autonomously when necessary and to eliminate some operator error.
Research Assistant
During my time at Mines, I worked alongside my advisor, Dr. Nils Tilton, to develop and benchmark numerical models for the simulation of reverse osmosis and membrane distillation systems. I developed a second-order accurate model for the challenging case of unsteady water flow over an immersed object. This allowed me to study the flow regimes and solute transport that exist in some of the most common real-world water filtration applications.
Student Research Assistant
Participated in ongoing research for Dr. Timothy Doughty on the use of a Nondestructive health monitoring technique as a viable method for predicting catastrophic failure in a structure. Completed research to find new test conditions that could verify the robustness of this model. Planned and carried out several tests. Collected hundreds of hours of data using LabVIEW and NI-DAQs that was processed using a Nonlinear Modal Tracking method. Created a MatLab program that could analyze the collected data in near-real time and plot the results for immediate viewing.
Summer Help
Worked with experienced professionals to keep the Shelton Waste Water Treatment facilities functional and presentable. Placed in charge of other summer help to make sure tasks were completed. Carried out given responsibilities off-site in a timely manner without supervision.
